The attacker was none other than Matthew’s paternal half-brother Jeffrey Vogelsberg, who was then 28 years old and whom he’d first met when he was 19 years old. Back then, the pair readily integrated themselves into a blended family dynamic, but things swiftly changed when the latter allegedly started repeatedly assaulting his 9-month-old sibling. Records show that Jeffrey used to beat Matt with a 24 and shot him with a BB gun to make sure he stayed on the proper road. Initially, officials were unaware of these facts.

Everything so changed early on July 1, 2012, when a physical dispute between the two brothers resulted in Matthew being practically beaten to death by Jeffrey. Robert McCumber, their roommate and landlord, was the one who discovered the gruesome scene when he awoke in the morning. There was a body on the couch and bottles and pills were all over the table. Instead of dialing 911, he initially spoke with Jeffrey, who ultimately urged him to lock Matthew in the large freezer they kept in the garage and threatened to shoot him if he told anyone.
Because Jeffrey had left Missouri right away to attend his wife Shannon Remus’ basic Army training graduation, he did not expect to be back for at least four days. Once he did, he ultimately made the decision to bury his brother with Robert’s assistance. Subsequently, he even drove Shannon to the location in an effort to acquire a second opinion on whether or not his tracks were covered. As if that weren’t enough, he tried for months to give the authorities false information about Matthew’s potential location after the missing person inquiry got underway.

Until his mother used Matthew’s bank account and public assistance accounts to access his disability benefits and use them to pay for groceries for herself, Jeffrey’s fraud was effective. Following her interrogation, Robert was questioned as well. Robert eventually broke down and revealed all to the police about how the troubled relationship between the brothers ended. In November 2012, Jeffrey and his wife were detained in Washington (where Robert had been stationed), with his mother and Robert already in detention. They were later charged on various crimes.

Shannon was sentenced to two years of probation for lying to the police about whether or not Jeffrey ever took her to see Matthew’s grave, but Laura Robar, Matthew’s mother, was given a year in prison for identity theft. Robert, on the other hand, received a total term of 4 years in a state prison for his role in concealing the body, while Jeffrey received the harshest possible punishment for second-degree reckless homicide. In other words, the judge sentenced the real attacker to 15 years in prison plus 10 years on probation, saying she wished she could have given him more.
During Jeffrey’s hearing for punishment in late 2014, the judge stated, “There is something broken inside of you and I’m not sure it can be mended.” “Your attempts to hide the crime are more like something out of a horror movie than real life.” As a result, Jeffrey is still being held as a killer in a Wisconsin state prison today.
