Is Kevin Costner a Republican? Yellowstone star’s endorsement of Liz Cheney sparks online debate

Kevin Costner, who stars in the movie Yellowstone, recently wore a pro-Cheney T-shirt to show his support for Republican Representative Liz Cheney and to back her. The politician posted the picture on social media with the following caption:

The support comes before Cheney runs for re-election against Harriet Hageman, who has strong support from Donald Trump. Even though he is running as a Republican, the former is known for being one of the harshest critics of Trump.

Cheney, who is currently the vice chairwoman of a House committee, spoke out against the former president after the infamous attack on the Capitol on January 6.

Some Democrats backed the representative, but many Republican voters in Wyoming’s at-large congressional district, which is known for Trump’s big win in the 2020 presidential election, were not happy with her.

Even though Costner has made it clear that he supports Cheney, he no longer calls himself a Republican. In a previous interview with The Daily Beast, Costner said that he doesn’t like the labels “Democrat” or “Republican” because they don’t say enough about his political views.

Early on in his life, Kevin Costner was known for being a Republican and for being close friends with and supporting Ronald Reagan.

Reports say, though, that Costner eventually changed his mind about politics and gave money to a number of Democrats, including Al Gore and Tom Daschle.

In 1995, he was also seen giving his support to the Republican candidate Phil Gramm. During a campaign rally at Colorado State University, Costner told young people that their vote could change the world:

“We were going to make the world a better place, but we haven’t. My generation didn’t get it done, so we need you to help us.”

In 2019, the Oscar-winning actor backed Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg at an event in Iowa before he backed Joe Biden. He also read a commercial for J. D. Scholten, who is running for the US House of Representatives as a Democrat from Iowa.

In an interview with Variety in 2020, Kevin Costner talked about what he thought of Joe Biden and why he supported the president:

“I really think we need a president who can represent both sides. And for the people who don’t vote for Biden, he needs to talk about what worries them if he wins. I think he has enough brainpower to realize that the people who didn’t vote for him need help. They have their own worries, and we need to take that into account.”

In the same year, the Dances with the Wolves actor also talked about his political views in an interview with The Daily Beast. He said this about America’s two-party system:

“I don’t think the Democratic Party or the Republican Party stand for anything, and neither does the Democratic Party right now. So, I think it’s too narrow.”

Even though the Golden Globe winner has criticized Trump more than once, he told the magazine that his criticisms apply to both sides:

“Some people put their careers ahead of what’s best for the country. It’s not just Trump I’m talking about. I mean anyone who works in politics. You can look at him and all the other senators and representatives. Public service isn’t about your second term; it’s about the moment, and you should let history judge it.”
Kevin Costner also said that he doesn’t want to call himself a Republican like he did in the 1980s and 1990s. Instead, he’d rather be called “an independent.” He said that he only votes for people who he thinks “care about the country.”

Liz Cheney is in the middle of different political arguments since she turned against Donald Trump after the Capitol Riot on January 6.

In the politician’s current re-election campaign, he is up against strong opposition and Harriet Hageman, who is backed by Trump. Actor Kevin Coster backed the politician.

After Cheney posted the picture online, Costner’s support started a debate on social media right away.
