Life at home
Sock and his mother and older brother moved from Nebraska to Kansas when he was 12 so he could train at the Mike Wolf Tennis Academy. His father stayed in Lincoln to keep working as a financial advisor.
He went to Blue Valley North High School in Overland Park, Kansas, and when he was done, he had an 80–0 record in KSHSAA 6A tennis and had won four straight singles state titles.
In high school, he also played doubles with his brother Eric. In Jack’s sophomore year, the two of them won the team state championship. After Eric graduated and started playing tennis at the University of Nebraska, Jack won two more team state titles. Jack and Eric also played doubles together at the 2017 BB&T Atlanta Open as a wild card entry.
Sock dated tennis player Sloane Stephens in the past, and he was also linked to tennis player Katie Boulter in the past. On December 12, 2020, he got married to Laura Little, who was Miss North Carolina 2019.
Philanthropy
Sock, Bill Gates, and Savannah Guthrie were all at the Match for Africa 5 on March 5, 2018, at the SAP Center in San Jose, California. The friendly, best-of-three-sets charity exhibition match raised $2.5 million for the education of children in Africa. The Roger Federer Foundation got the net proceeds from the match. Federer won 7–6, 6–4 in the singles match and 6–3 in the doubles match.
A junior job
In October 2010, when Sock was a junior, he was ranked No. 22 in the world. At the Pan American Championships in October 2008, when he was 16 years old, he played in his first ITF junior tournament. At his third junior tournament, the 2009 US Open, he and Matthew Kandath made it to the semifinals of the junior doubles and the third round of the junior singles.
Sock, on the other hand, only played in two more junior tournaments: the Dunlop Orange Bowl in 2009 and the junior singles at the U.S. Open in 2010. He got in this tournament as a “wild card,” but he made it all the way to the final. There, he beat fellow American Denis Kudla in three sets to become the first American to win the junior championships since Andy Roddick in 2000. In 2010 and 2011, he won the Boy’s Junior National Tennis Championship. This got him into the main draw of the US Open both years.
Work as a professional
In 2009, Sock started to play in Futures tournaments. In November 2009, he won his first senior tournament on this circuit.
At the 2010 Miami Masters, he took part in his first ATP qualifying draw. At the 2010 US Open, he played his first professional match in the main draw. He lost to Marco Chiudinelli. Sock was ranked 878th in the world at the end of the 2010 season.
He got to the final of the USA F3 tournament in 2011. He also started to play in a few Challenger level tournaments. At the Dallas Challenger, he got as far as the quarterfinals, which was his best result. He also took part in the 2011 Miami Masters main draw. As the US Junior Champion in 2010, he got a wild card into the 2011 US Open. He beat Marc Gicquel in four sets in his first ATP match. In the second round, he played his idol Andy Roddick, who is also from Nebraska. He lost in straight sets, though. Sock’s big break came in the mixed doubles, where he and Melanie Oudin beat the defending champions Bob Bryan and Liezel Huber in the second round and made it to the final. Sock and Oudin beat Gisela Dulko and Eduardo Schwank in three sets in the final to win their first Grand Slam titles together and separately.
Sock went back to the Challenger Tour after winning his first Grand Slam title. Sock was ranked No. 381 in singles and No. 370 in doubles at the end of 2011.
Sock won the Futures tournament at Plantation in 2012, but he lost the final of the doubles tournament. Stepping back up to the Challenger level, he played at the Honolulu Challenger. In the singles tournament, he made it to the quarterfinals. In the doubles tournament, he and Nick Monroe again made it to the final.
Izak van der Merwe beat Sock in the second round of the 2012 Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships. Sock’s next match was the BB&T Atlanta Open in 2012. He beat Alex Bogomolov, Jr., who was the seventh seed. He got to the quarterfinals, but John Isner beat him there. Sock beat the 22nd seed, Florian Mayer, in the first round of the US Open when Mayer quit. Then, he beat Italy’s Flavio Cipolla, who was ranked 85th in the world, in straight sets. This put him in his first-ever Grand Slam third-round match against the 11th-seeded Nicolás Almagro, which he lost in four sets. Sock made it to his first two Challenger Tour finals in the last two months of the 2012 season. He won at Tiburon in October and came in second at Champaign-Urbana in November. Sock at the French Open in 2013
Sock had a slow start to 2013. At the Brisbane International and the 2013 Australian Open, he lost in the qualifying rounds.
But he got a wild card into the U.S. National Indoor Tennis Championships, where he won his first matches of the season and made it to the quarterfinals for the second time in his career. At the same tournament, Sock and James Blake, who was also there because of a wild card, played doubles and made it to the final, where they lost to the Bryan brothers. Sock got into the main draw of the 2013 French Open by going through three rounds of qualifying without losing a set. In the first round, he beat Guillermo Garca López, a good player, in just 1 hour and 59 minutes. He then lost in straight sets to 35-year-old pro Tommy Haas. He tried to get into Wimbledon for the first time, but Mischa Zverev beat him even though he was the second seed. He went back to the US and won his second Challenger level title on July 6 in Winnetka, Illinois. This was the first time in his career that he got into the top 100. He beat Philipp Petzschner in the first round of the US Open. He was up 5–2 in the third set when Petzschner gave up. Sock then beat Maximo Gonzalez. However, in the third round, he lost to the 18th seed, Janko Tipsarevi. His rank went up to No. 86 after the US Open.
