Fossey lived in Rwanda for 20 years, where she supported conservation efforts, fought hard against poaching and tourism in animal areas, and spread information about how smart gorillas are.
She was killed in her hut at a remote camp in Rwanda in December 1985, after a gorilla was shot and tensions rose because of it. Even though Fossey’s American research assistant was jailed while she was away, no one is sure who killed her.
Her research and efforts to protect mountain gorillas helped slow down their decline. Fossey was adamantly against wildlife tourism because gorillas are vulnerable to human-transmitted diseases like influenza, which they have little defense against. Fossey found many examples of gorillas dying because tourists carried diseases that killed them.

Dian Fossey was said to be dead when she was 53 years old. She was killed by a blow from a machete. On the morning of December 27, 1985, Fossey’s body was found in the bedroom of her lodge in the Virunga Mountains of Rwanda.
Her body was found face-up near the two beds where she had been sleeping, about 7 feet (2 meters) from a hole in the wall of the cabin that the person who killed her is said to have made (s).
Fossey’s last research assistant at Karisoke came to the scene with Fossey’s house servant and found her beaten to death. The house servant said that Fossey was already dead when she went to check her vital signs.
People broke into her cabin. But theft was not thought to have happened because Fossey’s things, like her handguns, passport, and thousands of dollars in US banknotes and traveler’s checks, were still in the cabin.

Rwandan courts tried Wayne McGuire and found him guilty of killing Dian Fossey even though he was not there. He was supposed to die, but he managed to stay alive.
McGuire was accused of killing Fossey to get the manuscript for the follow-up to her book “Gorillas in the Mist,” which came out in 1983. During the trial, which was held in Kinyarwanda, investigators said that McGuire was unhappy with his own research and wanted to keep going with it by “any dishonest means possible.”
After he got back to the U.S., McGuire spoke briefly at a news conference in Century City, Los Angeles. He called Fossey a “friend and mentor” and said that her death was “tragic” and that the accusations were “outrageous.”

The following year, her mother got back together with businessman Richard Price. Her father tried to stay in touch, but her mother was against it. As a result, they couldn’t talk to each other anymore. Fossey’s stepfather, Richard Price, never thought of her as his own child.
He wouldn’t let Fossey or her mother join him or her at the dinner table. Dian Fossey didn’t get much or any emotional support from Richard Price, who was a strict disciplinarian.
When Fossey was feeling down about herself, she looked to animals for approval. She has always loved animals, and it all started with her first pet goldfish. She got a letter from her school when she was six telling her to start riding horses. By the time she graduated in 1954, Fossey had made a name for herself as an equestrienne.
