The Club Experience of Colin Grainger
Before being chosen for a test at Wrexham in July 1949, Grainger spent his formative years at South Elmsall Boys. In 1949–50, he played for the reserve squad of the Cheshire County League.
His National Service limited his first-team options under manager Peter Jackson because he only participated in four games in the 1952–53 season and did not play in the 1951–52 campaign.
In October 1961, manager Norman Low paid Grainger £6,000 to join Third Division team Port Vale. On October 21, he made a “triumphant” debut, scoring in a 4–1 win over Torquay United at Vale Park.
In the fourth round of the FA Cup on January 27, he led his new team to a 0–0 tie with his old team Sunderland while also giving his teammates placebo pills to improve their morale.
He began the opening match of the 1963–64 campaign, a 1–0 loss to Shrewsbury Town, but a groyne injury kept him out for the following seven months, necessitating the acquisition of Ron Smith as a permanent left-wing substitute.
On August 7, 1964, Grainger signed a contract with Doncaster Rovers for a signing-on fee of £1,000 and a remuneration of £30 per week from outgoing manager Oscar Hold. On October 15, Grainger participated in his last official Football League game.
In 1978, Billy Bingham made Grainger an offer to work as a scout for Mansfield Town in the North East; Grainger suggested Chris Waddle to the team, but they declined. Later in his career, he worked as a scout for Neil Warnock at Oldham Athletic, Bury, and Sheffield United as well as Allan Clarke at Barnsley and Leeds United, Mick Buxton at Huddersfield Town, and all of Allan Clarke’s clubs.
The International Career of Colin Grainger
Grainger was chosen to represent the Football League in a representative game against the Irish League on April 25, 1956, at Belfast, which ended in a 5–2 loss. He received his first England cap on May 9, 1956, against Brazil in a friendly at Wembley Stadium.
He scored with his first touch of the ball in the first minute, then in the 83rd minute, he headed in England’s fourth goal.
Brazil won the World Cup two years later. During a tour of Scandinavia, he earned two further caps in victories against Finland (5–2) and Sweden (0–0), respectively.
Nat Lofthouse persuaded him to play in front of a pub packed of football journalists during this trip, and his reputation as a musician was cemented.

Colin Grainger musical career
In 1956, Grainger was signed by talent agent Len Young. He received £50 for his first performance, which included three songs from the catalogs of Al Jolson, Nat King Cole, and Billy Eckstine. He was the support act for the Hilltoppers in Sheffield.
He passed up the chance to travel with the Hilltoppers on a lucrative US tour because of his football commitments. Due to his accomplishments, he appeared on ITV and was given a regular piece in Brian Glanville’s Sport Express.
In February 1958, he agreed to a summer contract at £250 per week with MCA. In the summer of 1960, he was offered the option to tour Australia with comedian Nat Jackley, but he turned it down because it would conflict with his preseason football training.
On June 13, 1963, in Stockport, he shared a bill with the Beatles, who accepted the contract just a few months before their recent hit smash with “Please Please Me” and “From Me to You.” The Beatles were paid the same £50 as Grainger.
