Almost two hours had passed since they arrived at the Dial when a man approached them from the street, stopped nearby, and shot Ortiz once in the behind. It cut through Lopez, striking him in the thigh.
The shooter tried to fire again, but the pistol jammed. Ortiz fell to the ground, scattering the spectators on the terrace.
A businessman at the Dial named Eliezer Salvador rushed Ortiz to the hospital. Afterward, Lopez was brought to the same facility. He recovered from his wounds more quickly than Ortiz, who underwent surgery to treat his gallbladder and reconstruct a piece of his intestines, despite the fact that the bullet narrowly missed his major artery.
Ortiz was then transported by the Red Sox on an air ambulance to Boston, where he underwent numerous operations at Massachusetts General Hospital. He left the hospital on July 27, more than a month after the incident.
