It was only Georgia Tech’s second top-25 recruiting class, and the first since 2007, when Collins was the Yellow Jackets’ director of player personnel and put together the previous top-25 class. Before taking over at Georgia Tech, Collins had the best first two years as a head football coach at Temple in the school’s 121-year history. In his first two seasons with the Owls, Collins led them to 15 wins and two bowl games, which are both school records for a coach’s first two seasons at TU.
In his first year at Temple, Collins led the Owls to a 28-3 win over Florida International in the 2017 Gasparilla Bowl. This was only the third bowl win in Temple’s history and the first since 2011.

Mississippi State (2011–2014)
From 2011 to 2014, Collins was a coach at Mississippi State. During that time, Collins was the coach of All-American Fletcher Cox, who was picked first in the NFL Draft in 2012. When Collins was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2013, he helped lead a Bulldogs team that finished in the top five in the SEC in total defense, rushing defense, and passing defense. In 2014, Collins led Mississippi State’s defense to a 10-3 record by getting the most sacks in the SEC and having the best Red Zone defense in the conference.
Florida (2015–2016)
Collins was the defensive coordinator at Florida for two years while Jim McElwain was the head coach. Collins was in charge of the Gators’ defense, which was ranked sixth in 2016 and eleventh in 2015. In 2015, Collins’ defense became only the seventh team in the last 20 years to not give up a touchdown on the road against three FBS Power 5 schools. During his time at Florida, Collins coached five defensive players who were picked up by the NFL in 2016. He also helped Vernon Hargreaves become a consensus All-American. Temple (2017–2018)
Collins got his first job as a head coach in December 2016, when Temple hired him to take over for Matt Rhule. Rhule and Collins had worked together at Albright College and Western Carolina before.
Temple went 7–6 in Collins’s first season as head coach and won the 2017 Gasparilla Bowl. This was the program’s first bowl win since 2011 and only its third win overall.
In Temple’s second year under Collins, the Owls started 0-2 but ended the regular season with an overall record of 8-4 and a conference record of 7-1. Because of this, the Owls got into the 2018 Independence Bowl. Along the way, Collins beat Steve Addazio as the coach at Temple with the most wins in their first two years there.
Georgia Institute of Technology (2019–present)
Collins was named the 20th head coach of Georgia Tech football on December 7, 2018.
Collins has won three games in each of his first three seasons with the Yellow Jackets. He famously lost to The Citadel, whose team ran the “triple option” that Collins has criticized. Collins stopped losing to FCS teams in 2021, when Georgia Tech beat Kennesaw State. At the time, Kennesaw State was playing with their fourth string quarterback because all of their other quarterbacks had been hurt. Collins hasn’t won two games in a row at Georgia Tech yet.
