My mother put me in the esteemed Freedom Theatre school for black children. Her intention was to keep me off the streets.
She reassured me that I could leave this program early if I didn’t enjoy it. I told my mother I didn’t enjoy it and didn’t want to continue once my first semester was up.
I was qualified to play basketball for two local parks throughout that season. Since she applied for a scholarship to this system behind my back, I’ve been performing.
Yes, I was disappointed at the moment, but think about the outcome. I went to high school to study dance and theater. I then decided to study it in college. In this situation, mother definitely does know best because it was successful. I’m blessed.
Faruq spent the fall semester of his final academic year at the British American Drama Academy (BADA).
He took part in a scheme that selected more than 60 theater majors from around America to study and train in London. As soon as classes started, Faruq moved to Los Angeles.
And when we say immediately after, we really do mean immediately.
I graduated from college at 9:30 in the evening, and by 4:30 in the morning, I was at LaGuardia Airport traveling to Los Angeles.
My first work was in retail, but I soon realized that I needed an after-hours job to support my performance career during the day. I then pursued training to work as a server and bartender. I did work as a bartender for eleven years, in fact.
We inquired about Faruq’s “big break,” or the event that released him from his bartending responsibilities. He told us that he was still working on his big break.
I don’t think my big break has arrived yet. But there came a point where I was confident that I was going in the right direction. And the day actually came when I could quit my job and work only for fun.

Miller and Tauheed exchanged vows on November 2, 2013. For nine years, the pair has been married.
