Oscar Piastri is an Australian race car driver who used to be in the Alpine F1 Team’s driving academy. He is now the team’s backup driver.
After a great first year with PREMA Racing, Piastri won three championships in a row and the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2021.
After taking several Formula One tests, he joined the Alpine F1 Team in 2022 as a back-up driver.
Oscar will finish the Academy in 2022 and become a reserve driver for the BWT Alpine F1 Team. He will help the team at Grands Prix, work on team development in a simulator, and take part in a long schedule of tests in the winning Formula 1 car, the A521.

Before Piastri went back to Europe to do his job with the French-owned team based in the UK, his closest friends and family joined him.

Oscar Piastri’s father taught him how to drive go-karts
Piastri, who moved up to F2 in 2021, has made a lot of progress in the last few years thanks to the help of his family and parents.
In 2015, Piastri moved to Europe because there are a lot of junior single-seater championships and a lot of the F1 ladder is in Europe.
This happened after Australia’s regular go-karting session. Oscar’s parents, Chris and Nicole Piastri, have helped him to move up the ladder.
Oscar’s father, Chris, showed him how to drive a go-kart and helped him get started in racing. During these early races, Chris also worked as Oscar’s mechanic. This is common for father-son racing teams.

Career
Piastri was born in Melbourne, Australia, to parents who were both Italian and Australian. Before he started karting in 2011, he raced remote-controlled cars on a national level. In 2014, Piastri turned pro and raced in several Australian races and championships. The next year, he began racing with Ricky Flynn Motorsport in European and other CIK-FIA-sanctioned karting championships. In 2016, he moved to the UK to further his racing career. In Bahrain, where the 2016 World Championship was held, he came in sixth.
Formula 4
Early in 2016, Piastri got his first big sponsor, HP Tuners, which was started and is owned by his father. This money helped him keep racing. During the GP3 Series, F3, and F2 seasons, this was on his racing suit and car. Later in 2016, Piastri drove his first single-seater race with Dragon F4 in a few rounds of the Formula 4 UAE Championship. He won two podiums and finished sixth in the championship.
In 2017, the TRS Arden Junior Team put Piastri in their lineup for the British F4 championship. There, he won six races and got six pole positions, but Jamie Caroline won the championship.

Formula Renault Eurocup
In the 2018 Formula Renault Eurocup Championship, Piastri races at Monza.
In 2018, Piastri took part in the championship for the first time, and he did so with Arden. At the end of the season, he was ninth in the championship. He won three podiums, with his best finish being second at the second race at Hockenheim.
In December 2018, it was announced that Piastri would switch to R-ace GP, the team that had won the championship the year before.
He won his first race in the series at Silverstone[16], and he won again the next day at the same track.

Formula 3 Championship of the FIA
In October 2019, Piastri went to test with the FIA Formula 3 team champions, Prema Racing, after the season was over. In January 2020, the Italian team signed Piastri, along with Logan Sargeant and Frederik Vesti, to play in the next season.
In his first race at the Red Bull Ring, Piastri was third on the grid. At the first turn, he hit pole-sitter Sebastián Fernández. There was no damage, so he went on to win. Piastri finished second in both Hungaroring races and the first Silverstone feature race in a row. His first retirement of the season happened at the next Silverstone sprint race when his DRS got stuck open and he had to leave the race. After Piastri had trouble with reliability in qualifying for the second main race at Silverstone, teammate Sargeant took the lead in the championship from Piastri. Piastri began the sprint race in Barcelona in fifth place, but he passed several cars and was in first place before the end of the first lap. He stayed in his place to win his second time. After finishing fifth in the next feature race at Spa-Francorchamps, Piastri took the lead in the championship again. However, he lost it again when he was penalized for an illegal pass in the sprint race, which Sargeant won.
Jake Hughes got in the way of Piastri during qualifying at Monza, so Piastri got a penalty and started the main race in 15th place. By the end of the race, he had moved up to third place, and when Sargeant got into an accident, he took back the lead in the championship. Clément Novalak hit Piastri, which caused him to drop out of the sprint race. He was also given a five-place grid penalty for the next race because he had earlier pushed David Beckmann off the track. Even though Piastri quit, he stayed in the lead of the championship after his teammates got into a fight.
