Donovan Jamal McNabb, a retired American football quarterback who spent most of his time with the Philadelphia Eagles in the National Football League (NFL), was born on November 25, 1976. He played basketball and football for Syracuse University before entering the NFL. He was selected by the Eagles as the second overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft. After spending one season with each of the Washington Redskins and Minnesota Vikings, McNabb spent eleven seasons with the Eagles.
From 1999 to 2009, McNabb started at quarterback for the Eagles. Eight playoff appearances (2000-2004, 2006, 2008, and 2009), five NFC East division titles (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2006), five NFC Championship games (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2008), and Super Bowl XXXIX, which the Eagles lost to the New England Patriots, 24-21, were all achieved during his time with the team. In addition, he rose to become the Eagles’ all-time leader in passing attempts, completions, yards, and touchdowns.

Early Life of Donovan McNabb
McNabb was born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised there. Simeon Rice and Matt Cushing, two future NFL players, were his teammates while he was a sophomore at Mount Carmel High School. Together, they assisted Mount Carmel in defeating Wheaton Central High School to claim the 1991 State Championship. He guided the group to victory in the Chicago Prep Bowl as a senior. During his high school years, he also excelled in track and field and played basketball alongside Antoine Walker.
Donovan McNabb’s Career in College
Even though recruiters from multiple institutions approached McNabb, only Syracuse University and the University of Nebraska offered him scholarships to play quarterback in college football.
He was initially leaning toward attending Nebraska because he was excited about the prospect of playing for Tom Osborne. However, he ultimately made the decision to attend Syracuse and play for the Syracuse Orange football team, primarily to demonstrate that he was an effective “pocket passer,” but also for their broadcast journalism school.
After redshirting his freshman year at Syracuse in 1994, McNabb went on to start each game the rest of his collegiate career, compiling a 35-14 record.
He accounted for 354 total yards of offense as a freshman, including the longest touchdown pass in Syracuse history—a 96-yarder versus West Virginia University. At the conclusion of the season, the Big East Conference named him its rookie of the year.
In his junior season, McNabb accumulated 2,892 yards of total offense, breaking the previous school mark.
He completed 157 of 251 passes (62.5%) for 2,134 yards as a senior, leading Syracuse to a spot in the Orange Bowl versus Florida. He also pushed the eventual champion Tennessee Volunteers to the brink in a tight contest. His 22 touchdown passes tied Don McPherson, a former Eagle, for the most in a single season at the institution.
Additionally, McNabb ran for 438 yards and 8 touchdowns on 135 occasions. He had the sixth-best passing efficiency rating in the country (158.9) and the 22nd-best overall offense (233.8 yards per game). He scored five touchdowns against Miami and equaled a school record with four touchdown throws against Cincinnati (three rushing and two passing). Marvin Harrison, a future standout in the NFL, and McNabb played together for one season at Syracuse.
In addition to winning the Big East Offensive Player of the Year award three times between 1996 and 1998 and receiving first-team all-conference votes each of his four seasons, McNabb was voted the Big East’s offensive player of the decade for the 1990s. He was a 1998 Heisman Trophy finalist. Later, he was selected for the Syracuse Football All-Century squad.
Additionally, McNabb played as a walk-on for the Syracuse basketball team for two seasons under head coach Jim Boeheim.
