Early life and work
On January 20, 1965, Sophie Helen Rhys-Jones entered the world in a family that belonged to the middle class. She was born at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford. Her father, Christopher Bournes Rhys-Jones, was born in 1931, and he is now retired from his position as sales director for an importer of industrial tyres and rubber items. Her mother, Mary, was a charity worker and secretary. She was born Mary O’Sullivan and passed away in 2005.
She was given the name Helen after the sister of her father, Helen, who passed away in an accident involving a horse in 1960. Her older brother, David, was born in 1963. Both of her godfather and her father’s stepbrother spent their childhood in Sarawak, North Borneo, which at the time was a British protectorate administered by the White Rajahs. Her godfather, the actor Thane Bettany, is her daughter’s godfather. She is related to the family of the Viscounts Molesworth through her grandmother, Margaret Rhys-Jones, née Molesworth; he was the great-granddaughter of the Rev. John Molesworth, who was the father of Sir Guilford Molesworth and the great-grandson of Robert Molesworth, 1st Viscount Molesworth. She is a descendant of King Henry IV of England.
Rhys-Jones spent his childhood in Brenchley, Kent, in a farmhouse that was built in the 17th century and had four bedrooms. She began her education at Dulwich Preparatory School and then transferred to Kent College, Pembury, where she became friends with Sarah Sienesi. After graduating from Kent College, she shared a flat in Fulham with Sarah Sienesi, who later became her lady-in-waiting. She completed her education at the University of London. After that, Rhys-Jones attended West Kent College in Tonbridge to receive training as a secretary.
She started her career in public relations by working for a number of different companies. She spent four years at Capital Radio, where she was in charge of the press and promotions department. She also worked for the public relations firms The Quentin Bell Organisation and MacLaurin Communications & Media.
In addition to that, she spent a year working and travelling in Australia. Her time there included time spent as a ski representative in Switzerland. Rhys-Jones established her own public relations firm, RJH Public Relations, in the year 1996. For the first five years of the company’s existence, Rhys-Jones and her business partner, Murray Harkin, were responsible for its daily operations.
Marriage and Children

In 1987, Rhys-Jones had his first encounter with Prince Edward, the youngest son of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, when he was dating his friend’s girlfriend at the time. Rhys-Jones was working at Capital Radio at the time. She ran saw him again at a photo session for the Prince Edward Summer Challenge in 1993, which was organised to generate money for a charitable organisation. Shortly after that, the two started dating each other. Edward wrote a letter to the editors of various newspapers in December 1993, denying that they had any wedding plans and asking the media to respect their privacy. This came at a time when there was considerable speculation about whether or not they were intending to get married. In December of 1998, while on vacation in the Bahamas, Edward popped the question to Sophie. On January 6, 1999, the couple announced that they were engaged. Edward presented her with an engagement ring that was made of 18-karat white gold and included an oval diamond that was two carats in weight and was surrounded by two heart-shaped jewels. An estimate places the value of the ring at approximately £105,000. It was crafted by Asprey and Garrard, which is now known as Garrard & Co. Prior to Sophie and Edward’s engagement, she was granted permission to use the royal apartments at Buckingham Palace due to the fact that Sophie was reputedly close to the Queen from the outset of her relationship with Edward.
The wedding took place on June 19 of that year at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. This was a departure from the marriages of Edward’s older siblings, which were either held in Westminster Abbey or St. Paul’s Cathedral and were enormous, ceremonial events. Prince Edward was given the title of Earl of Wessex and the subsidiary title of Viscount Severn on the day of his wedding to the Countess of Wessex, making him a hereditary peer. As of 2018, the couple’s offices were temporarily relocated to St. James’s Palace as a result of repairs taking place at Buckingham Palace.
After reporting that she was not feeling well in December of 2001, the Countess was checked into the King Edward VII Hospital. She was found to be suffering from an ectopic pregnancy, and the foetus needed to be removed in order to prevent further complications. Two years later, on November 8, 2003, she gave birth to her daughter Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor before her due date. This was the result of a sudden placental abruption that put the lives of both the mother and the child in danger. The Countess of Wessex was forced to undergo an emergency caesarean section at Frimley Park Hospital, while the Earl of Wessex rushed back from Mauritius. On December 17, 2007, the Countess went back to Frimley Park Hospital to give birth to her son, James Mountbatten-Windsor, Viscount Severn. This time, she went through another caesarean section during the delivery.
