Cory Wharton and Baby Maya Cory Wharton and longterm girlfriend Taylor Selfridge welcomed their first child, Maya Grace Wharton, on June 1. Maya is Cory’s third kid and their second together after Mila Mae, 2. He and his ex-girlfriend Cheyenne Floyd have a 5-year-old son named Ryder.
Cory announced the birth of his daughter on Instagram on June 10th, but he also revealed that his newborn girl had been diagnosed with tricuspid atresia, a congenital cardiac abnormality that necessitates open-heart surgery. “I’m not sure where to start with this,” he wrote, “there’s so much I want to say, so much I’ve felt over the past week.” “As a parent, you’re terrified, worried, nervous, upset, sad, and angry, and you don’t know why this is happening to your child.”
Tricuspid atresia occurs when the tricuspid valve between the two ventricles of the heart fails to form. “Instead, there is hard tissue between the chambers that inhibits blood flow and causes the right lower chamber (ventricle) of the heart to be undeveloped,” according to the Mayo Clinic. “A person with tricuspid atresia cannot obtain enough oxygen through their body,” according to the clinic. This illness causes people to become exhausted rapidly, have shortness of breath, and have bluish skin.”
According to the clinic’s website, the problem can be managed with numerous procedures. “Most newborns with tricuspid atresia who have surgery live well into maturity,” she adds. Maya’s first of three open heart surgeries went successful, according to Cory’s Instagram post. He wrote, “She is on the mend.” “She’s doing great, and we can’t wait to bring her home and shower her with love.”
Maya will require a second open-heart surgery between the ages of 4-6 months and 3 or 4 years, according to the “Challenge” veteran. “This is Maya’s path, and I’ve debated whether or not I want to share this news,” he wrote. Maya was born on June 1 at 10:39 p.m. and weighed 8 pounds 4 ounces, according to Taylor in a similar Instagram post. She wrote, “My tiny love, you are so lovely.” “Mom is smitten with you. Maya’s diagnosis of tricuspid atresia was discovered when she was 22 weeks pregnant, according to the Teen Mom star. “We discovered she would require three open-heart procedures, one of which would be required within the first week of her life,” she explained. “In a matter of seconds, our lives were flipped inside out.” “With outstanding cardiologists, we were able to put in a stent instead of the first open-heart surgery,” Taylor said, adding that Maya delivered birth much better than they had hoped.
Maya was only 6 days old when she had her first surgery, according to her mother. “The last image was her surgery day; we were overjoyed to hear that she was done and out of surgery, but it was quite overwhelming when we came in to see our baby,” she explained, adding that she felt “very helpless” throughout the procedure. “I first held her when I was five days old,” she continued. For us, the last nine days have been a full rollercoaster, and it’s been the most difficult week I’ve ever had as a mother.”
