With his brother Mike and some of their friends, Brooks participated in the Lunatic Wrestling Federation, a backyard wrestling organization, during the mid-late 1990s. He competed for the first time on March 13, 1999. In a tag team called The Chick Magnets alongside CM Venom after another performer dropped out on the card, he initially began using the ring name CM Punk, which stood for “Chick Magnet.” Punk, in contrast to his friends, actually want to be a wrestler and considered the sport as more than just amusement.
