The lead character in both the book and movie versions of Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens is Catherine “Kya” Clark. Kya is a made-up character who isn’t closely based on any person from real life. But author Delia Owens acknowledged that in creating the character of Kya, she drew influence from her own life.
According to Owens, she lived most of her life alone. The author was a zoologist who spent many years researching wildlife in Africa. Does the book’s Kya murder Chase Andrews?
In the first book, Kya befriends Chase Andrews, a talented quarterback for Barkley Cove. Kya and Chase are drawn to one another. Chase makes sexual advances, but Kya rejects them. Nevertheless, the two begin a turbulent romance that quickly unravels. Kya discovers that Chase’s claims that he would marry her were untrue and that his true motivation was to have sex with her. Kya breaks things off with Chase as she learns what his genuine motivations are. Chase tries to make up with Kya, but their talk quickly turns aggressive.
While being observed by two men, Chase makes an attempt to rape Kya and then flees. Later, when Chase’s body is found, a homicide investigation is launched. As Sheriff Ed Jackson investigates the slaying, he comes to the conclusion that Kya is responsible for the crime. Nevertheless, Kya is acquitted throughout the court case because there isn’t any conclusive proof connecting her to Chase’s murder. As a result, Kya is unhindered and leads a wonderful life with Tate, her other love interest.
Tate discovers a shell necklace worn by Chase among Kya’s belongings after she dies in her 60s. Kya’s poetry and the jewelry are proof that she murdered Chase. Although Kya’s motivation for killing Chase isn’t made clear, it probably had something to do with his treatment. Kya worries that if she reports Chase’s rape attempt, the locals would hold her responsible. After Chase’s assault, Kya is also concerned for her safety. She probably killed Chase as a result to defend herself from more attacks. Kya is ultimately found to be innocent by the court, despite years of rumors among the locals that she killed Chase.
