Etterlene DeBarge is the mother of Bobby DeBarge, a prominent singer and guitarist who died at the age of 39.
Etterlene, a religious woman, released a gospel CD titled Back on Track under the DeBarge Family alias with the support of her children. A City Called Heaven, her second gospel album, was released in 2005.
She is also the author of Other Side of the Pain, a book about her difficulties in her marriage to her children’s father, as well as her children’s ascent to stardom and troubles in the spotlight.
Etterlene’s sons, El and Chico, have lately released critically acclaimed albums. El’s album, Second Chance, was nominated for two Grammys last year.

Etterlene DeBarge was one of 12 sisters growing up in a large family. Her first husband, Robert DeBarge, a former Army soldier of French and English origin from Cicero, Illinois, met her in 1952.
They married in 1953 and had ten children in a predominately black Detroit neighborhood. Etterlene and Robert DeBarge divorced in 1974.
She then married a second time, to George Rodriguez, a Puerto Rican, perpetuating the idea that the DeBarge family was half-Hispanic. The married couple did not have any children of their own.
The majority of her children and grandchildren work in the entertainment industry. Two of her 10 sons were killed. Bobby Debarge died as a result of AIDS complications, whereas Thomas DeBarge died as a result of liver and renal failure.
