Etterlene DeBarge is a lyricist, gospel vocalist, and the matriarch of the American group DeBarge. Bobby DeBarge, who died in 1995, was her son.

Etterlene, often known as Mama D, has had a lot to be joyful about recently. El and Chico, her sons, have just recorded critically acclaimed records.

Her granddaughter, Kristinia, released her first album on Island Def Jam Records under the coaching and mentoring of Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, and the record produced the No. 3 dance smash “Goodbye.”

DeBarge also recently learned that a big film company is planning a miniseries about her family, akin to ABC’s five-part series about the Jacksons. The miniseries will be based on her 2008 memoir “The Other Side of the Pain,” which she self-published.

Family of Etterlene DeBarge with husband George Rodriguez

Etterlene DeBarge was one of 12 sisters growing up in a large family. Her first husband, Robert DeBarge, a former Army soldier of French and English origin from Cicero, Illinois, met her in 1952.

They married in 1953 and had ten children in a predominately black Detroit neighborhood. Etterlene and Robert DeBarge divorced in 1974.

The majority of her children and grandchildren work in the entertainment industry. Two of her 10 sons were killed. Bobby Debarge died as a result of AIDS complications, whereas Thomas DeBarge died as a result of liver and renal failure.
