Bethany Jane Mead, an English professional footballer who plays forward for both the England national team and Women’s Super League side Arsenal, was born on May 9, 1995. She is a talented and productive forward who ranks second all-time in the WSL for goal contributions and has the most all-time assists (3). She led England to its first major tournament victory at UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 by winning the Golden Boot, Player of the Tournament, and most assists. She later won the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year award and placed second in the voting for the Ballon d’Or and UEFA Player of the Year Award.
Mead became the youngest WSL Golden Boot winner at the age of 20 in 2015 after winning the WSL Golden Boot and WSL Player of the Year awards. Only a season had passed since she had steered her former club Sunderland to promotion and the 2014 WSL 2 championship. She is recognized as one of the greatest players to have ever played for Sunderland, having scored 77 goals in 78 games.
Mead, an Arsenal winger who was later converted, holds a number of playmaking records in the WSL, including the most assists overall, the most assists in a season, the most opportunities created in a season, the most chances created from open play, and the most chances created overall.
She placed first in the WSL for the seasons 2018–19 and 2021–22, and second in 2020–21. She was a candidate for WSL Player of the Season in 2021–2022. She and Arsenal won the 2018–19 WSL championship.
Mead beat Jimmy Greaves’ 61-year record for the most goals scored by an English player of either gender in a season in 2022.
She gave England the second-most assists in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which helped them advance to the semifinals.

Mead started her childhood career with California Girls FC, moved to the Middlesbrough F.C. Center of Excellence at age 10, and then joined Sunderland at age 16.

2011–14: Directing the Promotion of Sunderland to the WSL
Mead scored 23 goals in as many games during her debut season in the FA Women’s Premier League in 2011–12, and she finished the campaign with 29 goals across all competitions. She was the FA WPL Golden Boot winner, assisting Sunderland in their hat trick. Mead’s winning goal against Leeds United helped Sunderland win the title.
Additionally, Sunderland became the first team to win the FA Women’s Premier League Cup. Sunderland Player of the Year was Mead.
Mead had a successful FA WPL season in 2012–2013, scoring 30 goals in 28 games. She earned the FA WPL Golden Boot award once more, aiding Sunderland in retaining their championship. She was once more awarded the best player in Sunderland.
Sunderland won the championship in the 2014 FA WSL 2 season, earning them promotion to the FA Women’s Super League for the 2015 FA WSL season.

Mead scored in Sunderland’s shocking 2-1 victory over the defending champions Liverpool in her first game at the highest level.
Mead had eight goals by the time she scored a hat-trick on July 19, 2015, against league-leading Chelsea. Mead avoided harm earlier that week despite sliding her car three times while dodging a deer. She scored twice in a 4-1 victory at Bristol the following week, propelling Sunderland to the top of the WSL.
Mead, who was 20 years old, finished the 2015 season as the WSL’s top goal scorer with 12 goals in 14 games, becoming the league’s youngest-ever Golden Boot winner. Only about half of Mead’s goals—7—were scored by the next-best players. Sunderland came in fourth position overall. Only one season had passed since Sunderland’s elevation, and the team had significantly fewer resources than the giants in the division.

Since 2017 with Arsenal
On January 24, 2017, it was revealed that Mead had been hired by Arsenal on an unspecified duration full-time contract.
Since 2015, she had turned down many invitations from Arsenal to complete her degree in Sports Development.
Mead and her alma mater Teesside University were motivated by this to establish the Beth Mead Scholarship in 2022 in order to aid dual-career students who have the ability to excel in women’s football at the professional, national, or international levels.
Mead was forced to play as a winger at Arsenal since summer 2017 newcomer Vivianne Miedema quickly took over the center-forward position: “Prior to joining Arsenal, I had played No. 9 my entire career. I felt that No. 9 was my finest position, therefore I was a little miffed that I wasn’t playing it. But now days, I actually like playing on the wing. Mead scored against her old team Sunderland in the quarterfinal and Reading in the semifinal to help Arsenal win the 2017–18 FA Women’s League Cup. Mead scored eight goals to complete the 2017–18 campaign as Arsenal’s best league scorer.
Mead received several awards in 2018 including the FA WSL Team of the Year, the FSA Player of the Year, the Arsenal Women Supporters Club Player of the Season, and the second-time England Young Player of the Year.

Under Joe Montemurro, Mead completely rebuilt herself as a versatile winger during the 2018–19 season, shattering the WSL record for the most assists in a season (12).
Mead also outperformed the league in a number of creative statistics, often by a significant margin. She recorded the most assists per 90 (0.71), most carries into the penalty area (42), highest xG assisted (6.6), most crosses into the penalty area (19), and the most shot-creating actions (96); the second-most key passes (54), the second-most passes into the penalty area (43), the second-most goals-creating actions (20), and the second-highest goals-creating actions per 90 (1.18); and the third-highest shot-creating actions per 90 (5.6). On April 28, 2019, Mead closed off a fantastic campaign by scoring the third goal in Arsenal’s 4-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion to capture the league title.

2019–21: A fresh long-term agreement
Mead and Arsenal agreed to a new, long-term contract on November 28, 2019. For the 2019 FSA Player of the Year Award, Mead was a nominee.
On February 13, 2020, Mead was hurt during a 3-2 league victory over Liverpool. She suffered a medial collateral ligament injury, Arsenal revealed a week later. The coronavirus pandemic caused the 2019–20 season to finish early on March 13, 2020.
The only WSL team to advance to the quarterfinal of the 2019–20 UEFA Women’s Champions League was Arsenal. Mead scored the lone goal for Arsenal against Paris Saint-Germain in the quarterfinal round on August 28, 2020.
Beth Mead’s Awards
After the first half on January 27, 2022, Arsenal trailed Brighton & Hope Albion 0-1 in the match. Mead sent an inch-perfect pass across the face of the Brighton goal just five minutes after the break, and Vivianne Miedema was in the ideal spot to score from close range. Mead didn’t stop there, though, as she took a free kick on the outskirts of the area and attempted to score herself. Her magnificent curling effort found the top right corner to give her team the victory. She received the Player of the Match award. Mead reached the 50th WSL goal on April 24, 2022, as Arsenal defeated Everton 3-0. He also became the WSL’s all-time assist leader. Jordan Nobbs’ 50th WSL goal was also made possible by her assist on that goal. She received the Player of the Match award.
Mead established herself as the centerpiece of the pressing and counter-pressing approach under new manager Jonas Eidevall in addition to her noteworthy creative numbers and prolific goal scoring.
She was at the top of the list for defensive and pressing actions in the last third.
She made the most tackles (61) and won the most (43), the most pressures (381), the most successful tackles, and the second-most blocks (32) in Arsenal. She won the third-most tackles in the WSL. Such figures are uncommon for a forward to attain. Eidevall commented on her ability to counterpress: “Beth Mead is the fastest player I’ve ever coached at counterpressing. She can close a player down by running 15 meters in only a few seconds.”
Mead contributed to 70 goals for the club and his country during the season with 14 goals and 19 assists in 40 games for Arsenal. She won the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year award and came in second place for both the UEFA Player of the Year Award and the 2022 Ballon d’Or Féminin.
Mead was also a candidate for the PFA Fan’s Player of the Year and the FA WSL Player of the Season.
She overwhelmingly took home the Arsenal Player of the Season Award as well as the Arsenal Women Supporters Club Player of the Season Award.
