Barbra Streisand & Mark Ruffalo: Accused of Islamophobia, Calling SCOTUS ‘American Taliban’

Hollywood celebrities Barbra Streisand and Mark Ruffalo have taken to Twitter to accuse the Supreme Court of being the “American Taliban” in the wake of the court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Ruffalo and Streisand made their accusations shortly after the court announced its decision.

Roe v. Wade, a historic decision from 1973 that established the right to abortion under the Constitution, was overruled on Friday, June 24 by the Supreme Court of the United States. Liberal Hollywood was incensed by the judgement, and hundreds of celebrities voiced their disapproval of the Supreme Court’s decision. Actress and singer Barbra Streisand, who is a winner of an Oscar, expressed her anger by referring to the Supreme Court as “the American Taliban.” The star of “Yenta” stated that the Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to abortion by relying on religious beliefs to accomplish it. “This Court is the official representative of the American Taliban.” Even Mark Ruffalo, who plays the Marvel character Hulk, has weighed in on the “American Taliban” debate. Ruffalo proceeded by encouraging supporters to “fight like hell” in the subsequent sentence.

Some people responded to Ruffalo and Streisand by expressing their unhappiness that the actors had likened the Islamic Taliban to Christians, while other people rose up in support of Ruffalo and Streisand’s statements.

Ruffalo was given a reply from a user who said, “Abortion is not against the rules of Islam. Put it in the proper context. They adhere to an extreme form of Christianity.” While still another user provided clarification, “Do not make an analogy to the Taliban. Christians are responsible for this, as evidenced by what they are saying. This is the extreme form of Christian belief. Not everything that’s wrong in the United States can be attributed to Muslims. This decision has nothing to do with anything other than being American and, more importantly, Christian.”

“This is not a valid comparison because even the Taliban will make an exception to their prohibition on abortion if the mother’s life is in danger. This is what Christianity looks like, “A commenter brought up an interesting aspect regarding Streisand’s analogy. Another person added, “It’s a Christofascist court,” on the website. A user who agreed with Streisand’s tweet and stated the following: “Barbra You have so perfectly articulated my thoughts!” In response to Ruffalo’s comment, one user said, “The United States of America has descended so far into a nightmare.”

Do not make an analogy to the Taliban. Christians are responsible for this, as evidenced by what they are saying. This is the extreme form of Christian belief. Not everything that’s wrong in the United States can be attributed to Muslims. This decision has nothing to do with anything other than being American and, more significantly, Christian.
On Friday, June 24, the United States Supreme Court decided by a vote of 6-3 to reverse the landmark Roe v. Wade verdict that was handed down in 1973 and established abortion as a constitutional right. The decision, a draught version of which was obtained by Politico on May 3rd, would have a significant impact on the lives of women living in the United States. About half of the states in the United States may soon have laws that effectively outlaw abortion. As a consequence of the judgement being reversed, many detractors have predicted “seismic” shifts in the social landscape of the United States. It will be a watershed decision that will have consequences all across the world because it will be seen as a victory for conservative right-wing thinking.
