In October 1976, Ashe met Jeanne Moutoussamy at a United Negro College Fund event. Moutoussamy is a photographer and graphic artist. Moutoussamy is the daughter of the architect John Moutoussamy. Her ancestry is a mix of Indo-Guadeloupean and African-American.
On February 20, 1977, they got married at the Church Center for the United Nations in New York City. Andrew Young, the American ambassador to the UN, was in charge of the ceremony.
