Amal Fashanu is one of three children that were born to English television presenter and former professional footballer John Fashanu. Amal is the middle kid.
John played as a center forward from 1978 until 1995; in addition, throughout his eight-year career with Wimbledon, he won the FA Cup in 1988 and scored more than 100 goals across all competitions. John retired from playing in 1995.

A sports foundation was established by the television presenter in memory of her late uncle Justin Fashanu, an English footballer and proud gay athlete who competed for a number of clubs between 1978 and 1997. Fashanu played for a number of clubs throughout those years.
However, Justin ended his own life in March of 1998 when a 17-year-old boy alleged that the athlete had assaulted him after a night of drinking in March of 1998. Justin’s death came following the allegation. After the investigations and the issuance of an arrest warrant, he ran away to England from the United States and later hanged himself in a lock-up garage in Fairchild Place, Shoreditch, in London.
Fashanu rejected the allegations and admitted that he had fled the scene because he believed that his homosexuality would prevent him from receiving a fair trial and because he did not want to be a shame to his friends and family. Therefore, Amal made a pledge to her uncle that she would support gay football players until there was representation in the highest level of sport.
It’s likely that hearing about what happened to the late football player inspired her to advocate for LGBTQ rights and against racism in sports. Because the activist is a member of the LGBTQ+ community, he does not wish to publicly acknowledge his sexual orientation.
