She met her husband, Brooklyn’s Alexander Baldwin Jr., at Syracuse University, where they were both students. They married and had six children on Long Island, where they nurtured them until Alexander Baldwin died in 1983 at the age of 55.

The mother of six was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1991. She overcame the disease and went on to help establish the Carol M Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund at Stony Brook University, with the backing of the university’s president at the time. A second chapter was established at SUNY Upstate University a few years later.
