Michael Jerome Oher (/r/; born May 28, 1986; formerly Williams Jr.) is a retired American football offensive tackle who spent eight seasons in the National Football League (NFL), mostly with the Baltimore Ravens. He played college football for Mississippi, where he was taken by the Ravens in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft and received unanimous All-American accolades. He also participated for the Carolina Panthers and Tennessee Titans.
One of the subjects of Michael Lewis’ 2006 book The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game and the star of the Academy Award-winning 2009 film The Blind Side was Oher’s life during his senior year of high school and first year of college.
Michael Oher Early Years
Michael Jerome Williams, Jr. was one of Denise Oher’s 12 children and was born in Memphis, Tennessee. His father, Michael Jerome Williams, was regularly incarcerated, while his mother struggled with alcoholism and a crack cocaine addiction. He was not well-cared for or disciplined when he was little. During his first nine years of school, he attended eleven different schools and repeated the first and second grades. He was placed in foster care at the age of seven and spent time living in different foster homes as well as on the streets. Oher’s father was murdered in prison when he was a sophomore in high school. He had previously shared a cell with Denise Oher’s brother.
In his first year of high school, Oher participated in football at a Memphis public high school. On the advice of Tony Henderson, an auto technician with whom he was staying temporarily, he submitted an application for admission to Briarcrest Christian School. Henderson believed Oher might join as well because he was enrolling his son in the school to satisfy the dying request of the boy’s grandmother. Hugh Freeze, the football coach at the school, gave the headmaster Oher’s application, and the headmaster agreed to admit him if Oher could first finish a home study course. Despite not finishing the course, he got admitted once the headmaster realised that Oher had left the public school system because of his prerequisite.
Oher was coached by Freeze and Tim Long, the offensive line coach at Briarcrest, and was selected to the first team of the Tennessee All-State team and Division II (2A) Lineman of the Year in 2003.
Oher was ranked as the No. 5 offensive lineman prospect in the nation by Scout.com and received a five-star rating.
Oher had been living with multiple foster families prior to that season and for the 20 months before that at Briarcrest. Freeze said that his employment with Ole Miss was the consequence of his prior friendship with Noel Mazzone, the team’s offensive coordinator, rather than a “quid pro quo” for persuading Oher to enrol there. The NCAA did not end its investigation into its allegations of conspiracy. However, it decided that Oher’s recruitment by Ole Miss did not violate any NCAA rules. On November 5, Michael got hitched to Tiffany Roy, his longtime girlfriend, at the JW Marriott in Nashville, Tennessee. The Oscar-nominated film The Blind Side was inspired on their story.

As a tribute to Roy’s native New Orleans, guests went around the dance floor as the bride and groom celebrated with a second-line band. Al Paris’ birthplace of Memphis is where Oher was born.
Roy felt that even though her LYSÉE by Enzoani dress caught on her shoe as she walked down the aisle, the day was still filled with a lot of love, excitement, and happiness.
