Kevin Tway’s Amateur Career

Tway was awarded The Oklahoman’s All-City Player of the Year honors in 2006 and 2007 while he was a student at Edmond North High School, where he was born and raised in Edmond, Oklahoma. In 2006, the American Junior Golf Association selected him for the All-American first team, and in 2005, he was chosen for the All-American second team. He was the individual champion in the Oklahoma Class 6A competition in both 2006 and 2007. Tway was victorious at the United States Junior Amateur in 2005 and went on to compete in the quarterfinals the following year.

Tway attended Oklahoma State University during his collegiate golfing career. During his first year of college, he was a member of the team that won the NCAA Central Regional, was recognized to the All-American honorable mention list, made first team All-Big 12, and was chosen for the All-Central Region squad.

Tway earned a spot in the 2008 U.S. Open, which was held at Torrey Pines, but he was eliminated in the second round after shooting rounds of 75 and 78, missing the cut by four strokes. Tway was eliminated from the 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship by Derek Fathauer in the round of 16.

International Career of Kevin Tway

After receiving his degree from Oklahoma State in 2011, Tway made the transition to the professional ranks. At the 2011 Travelers Championship, he made his debut as a professional golfer. His father caddied for him throughout the tournament. In 2013, he competed on the Web.com Tour and earned his first victory in July at the Albertsons Boise Open. He triumphed over Spencer Levin in the first hole of a playoff by making a birdie, which ended the match. Both of them had a score that broke the tournament record of 261 (–23). Tway earned his PGA Tour card for the 2014 season by finishing fifth on the money list during the regular season.

Tway only made the cut in eight of the season’s 23 events, and he did not place in the top 10 in any of those events. His best finish came in 2014 at the Travelers Championship, where he tied for 26th place. However, he completed the season 177th in FedEx Cup points, which caused him to lose his PGA Tour card. Tway played on the Web.com Tour again in 2015 and placed in the top 10 twice, including a runner-up result at the Mexico Championship.

Despite this, he finished 28th on the money list, which was three spaces worse than the position that would have earned him a PGA Tour card.

Tway made his comeback to the Web.com Tour in 2016, and his performances were significantly better than the previous year. Even though he placed in the top 10 four times out of twenty starts, including a solo third place finish at the Price Cutter Charity Championship, he did not automatically earn his card at the end of the regular season and finished in the 27th position on the money list. Tway was able to regain his PGA Tour card for the 2017 season as a result of his strong play during the final stop of the Web.com Tour in 2016, which included a finish of third place or better at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship.

In 2017, Tway’s season got off to a sluggish start, as he did not have a finish in the top 30 in any of his first eleven starts. However, in April, Tway knocked off three consecutive top-5 finishes, as he finished tied for third at the Valero Texas Open, alone in third place at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans (partnering with Kelly Kraft), and tied for fifth place at the Wells Fargo Championship. Additionally, Tway improved his standing in the FedEx Cup from 175th to 55th in those events, effectively securing his place on the Tour for the next year. It was his first time qualifying for the playoffs, and he finished the year tied for 69th in points, which allowed him to easily keep his card for 2018.

Tway had a successful 2018 season, finishing in the top 10 three times out of 33 total events and making 26 of the 33 cutoffs. Again, Kevin had a fantastic spring, as seen by his ninth-place finish at the AT&T Byron Nelson, his top-five finish at the Fort Worth Invitational, and his sixth-place finish at the Travelers Championship. He finished tied for 87th place in the points standings, which allowed him to comfortably keep his PGA Tour card for the next year. This was his second consecutive year of making the playoffs.

Tway won the Safeway Open for the first time in his career on the PGA Tour on October 7, 2018, beating off Brandt Snedeker and Ryan Moore in a playoff to take the title. This victory marked the beginning of the 2019 season. Tway joined the three-man playoff by achieving a birdie on the final two holes of regulation play. Tway and Moore both made birdies on the opening hole of the playoff, but Snedeker only managed to make par, which meant he was eliminated from the round. Both Tway and Moore made birdies on the second hole of the playoff, which resulted in the need for a third hole. Tway won the match after sinking a birdie putt from ten feet away on the third hole of the playoffs.
