A career in television (2008–2010)
When Gautam decided to pursue a career in the film industry, she relocated to Mumbai, India, at the age of twenty. Her first appearance on television was in the show Chand Ke Paar Chalo. She carried on with her role as the protagonist in Raajkumar Aaryyan. After this, she appeared on the television show Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam for Colors, which is widely considered to be her most significant television role to date. In addition to that, she has been a contestant on the reality shows Meethi Choori No. 1 and Kitchen Champion Season 1.
First feature film and early works (2009–2018)
Gautam made her debut in a leading part with the 2009 Kannada film Ullasa Utsaha. Subsequently, she made her debut in a leading role with the romantic comedy Vicky Donor, which was directed by Shoojit Sircar (2012). She played the role of Ashima Roy, a Bengali woman who falls in love with the titular character, a Punjabi lad from the Arora family, and finds out about his past after getting married.
