Family and early life

Ono was born in Tokyo City on February 18, 1933, to Isoko Ono (1911–1999) and Eisuke Ono, a rich banker who used to be a classical pianist.

Zenjiro Yasuda was Isoko’s adopted maternal grandfather. He was a member of the Yasuda clan and zaibatsu. Eisuke came from a long line of warrior-scholars who were also samurai. The name Yoko, written in kanji, means “ocean child.” Two weeks before Ono was born, Eisuke’s boss at the Yokohama Specialty Bank sent him to work in San Francisco, California. The rest of Ono’s family came soon after. She met her father for the first time when she was just two years old. In December 1936, her younger brother Keisuke was born.

In 1937, Ono’s family moved back to Japan, and he went to one of Japan’s most exclusive schools, Gakushin (also known as the Peers School) in Tokyo.

From the time she was 4 years old until she was 12 or 13, Ono took piano lessons.

She went to kabuki shows with her mother, who knew how to play the shamisen, koto, otsuzumi, kotsuzumi, nagauta, and could read Japanese musical scores.

In 1940, they moved to New York City. The following year, Eisuke was sent from New York City to Hanoi, and his family moved back to Japan. Ono went to Keimei Gakuen, which is a Christian primary school run by the Mitsui family and is only open to Christians. She stayed in Tokyo during World War II and the fire bombing on March 9, 1945. She and other family members took shelter in a special bunker in Tokyo’s Azabu district, away from the heavy bombing, during the fire bombing. Later, Ono and some of her family went to the Karuizawa mountain resort.

After the bombings in Tokyo, there was a lot of destruction, and many people were starving. The Ono family had to beg for food while pulling their belongings in a wheelbarrow. Ono said that it was during this time in her life that she became “aggressive” and understood what it meant to be a “outsider.” Other stories say that her mother took a lot of things to the country, where she traded them for food. In one story, her mother traded a sewing machine made in Germany for 60 kg (130 lb) of rice so the family could eat. During this time, people thought that Ono’s father, who had been in Hanoi, was in a prisoner of war camp in China. On October 16, 2007, Ono told Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! “He was in Saigon, which is in Vietnam, which used to be called French Indochina. He was in a prison camp for bad people.”

After the war ended in 1945, Ono stayed in Japan while her family moved to the United States and settled in Scarsdale, New York, a wealthy town 25 miles (40 km) north of midtown Manhattan. By April 1946, Gakushin was back open, and Ono was able to sign up again. The war had not damaged the school, which was near the Tokyo Imperial Palace. Prince Akihito, who would become the next emperor of Japan, was in Ono’s class. She began learning how to sing lieder when she was 14 years old.

Starts in college and downtown

Ono graduated from Gakushin in 1951 and was the first woman to be accepted into the philosophy program at Gakushuin University. But after two semesters, she dropped out.

In September 1952, Ono moved to New York with her family. She went to Sarah Lawrence College, which was close by. Ono’s parents liked that she went to college, but they didn’t like her lifestyle and scolded her for making friends with people they thought were beneath her. In 1956, Ono dropped out of college to run away with Toshi Ichiyanagi, a Japanese composer who was a star in Tokyo’s experimental scene and was also a student at Juilliard.

She took poetry classes with Alastair Reid, English literature classes with Kathryn Mansell, and music composition classes with André Singer, who was trained in Vienna. Ono has said that the twelve-tone composers Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg were her heroes at the time. She said, “I just thought it was so cool what they could do. I wrote some twelve-tone songs, and then my music went in a direction that my teacher thought was really off track. He said, “Well, look, there are people who do things like what you do, and they’re called avant-garde.”” Singer showed her Edgar Varèse, John Cage, and Henry Cowell’s music. In 1957, Ono dropped out of college and moved to New York. There, she worked as a secretary and took classes at the Japan Society to learn about traditional Japanese arts.
