Winston Kirtley Jr., a native of Detroit, was formally charged on Wednesday, August 3, in relation to a weekend mass shooting on the city’s west side that left two people dead and six injured.
Winston Kirtley Jr., 36, was charged in 36th District Court with first-degree murder, assault with intent to murder, and other offenses, according to a statement from the Detroit police. Early on Sunday morning, he was taken into custody on Coyle Street.
Two counts of murder, six counts of attempted murder, two counts of firing a gun into a building, and ten counts of felony firearm are all brought against Winston Kirtley Jr.
A defendant named Winston Kirtley Jr. was charged and remanded in custody this morning. On August 18, he is scheduled to appear in court for a probable cause conference.
In a statement, prosecutor Kym Worthy said:

In relation to the Sunday night mass shooting on Coyle Street, Winston Kirtley Jr. has been charged by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
After an argument, Kirtley is accused of shooting at neighbors multiple times, killing two and injuring six others.
On the west side of Detroit, in the 11600 block of Coyle Street, close to Plymouth Road, the event allegedly occurred about 2:44 am on Sunday, July 30.
Homeowner Winston Kirtley Jr. allegedly became indignant at how people had parked their automobiles for a birthday celebration across the street from his property, according to Detroit Police Chief James White.
White provided a scenario:
“This was a birthday party, and there were people parked all over the house. Our suspect was furious because of where the cars were positioned. According to what I gather, one of the cars might have been obstructing the driveway.
According to the authorities, Winston Kirtley Jr. fired rounds from his home’s first and second stories. Police said that Kirtley fired several shots from a “high-powered weapon” after arguing with someone about parking.
White uttered,
“Instead of calling the police, instead of alerting the NPOs, who are responsible for handling such problems, he decided to take matters into his own hands, engaging them, and eventually shooting up the home, striking our eight victims, of which two are regrettably died,” the statement continued.

On Wednesday, Winston Kirtley Jr. was charged and lodged in the Wayne County Jail. A magistrate re-arrested Kirtley and set the 18th of August as the date for a probable cause hearing.
In a statement, White said:
The fact that two families must mourn their loved ones who were killed over a trivial disagreement by a person who showed no regard for other people’s lives is very sad. This shooting shouldn’t have happened, but thankfully our officers were able to capture the suspect before anybody else was wounded.
Authorities said that those affected in the hail of gunfire were sent to the hospital by ambulance after being hurt in an accident close to McNichols and Greenfield Roads.
Detroit resident Andre Willis Jr., 38, passed away there. On Monday, police said that a second victim had died from her injuries. She was eventually revealed to be Toyake Thirkeild, a 39-year-old inhabitant of Detroit. Officials haven’t yet confirmed the identity of the six more victims of the massacre.
