Why is BTS’ Jin delaying his enlistment in the military?

The Ministry of Defence had convened a meeting in 2021 to explore expanding the exemption provision from required military service to include musicians such as K-pop idols.

On April 9, immediately following BTS’ opening night of the four-day ‘Permission To Dance On Stage – Las Vegas’ concert, BTS and HYBE held a press conference in Las Vegas. One of the most talked-about subjects at the press conference was the mandatory military duty required of BTS members. In South Korea, all healthy male citizens, with the exception of national athletes, were required to enlist until they reached the age of 30. With the eldest member, Jin, reaching the maximum age limit in 2021, he and the rest of the members of BTS applied for a one-year postponement of their obligations.

However, since 2018, there have been continual discussions about exempting BTS from military service. In order to encourage more people to enlist, the government first raised the maximum age restriction from 28 to 30. Following that, they revealed that they had convened to examine the merits of exempting BTS from the law but that they had not reached a decision at the time. During this time period, BTS had frequently stated that they would be willing to serve in the military in order to fulfil their responsibilities as citizens. And while we received an update from HYBE’s CCO as well as Jin himself during the Vegas conference, it hasn’t done anything to alleviate the current situation.

BTS has applied for a postponement of military duty, and fans are looking forward to the OT7 global tour in 2022.

Why is BTS’ Jin delaying his enlistment in the military?

In 2021, the Ministry of National Defence convened a meeting to see how they may include artists who have made significant contributions to the exemption provision that was established for athletes and disabled citizens. It was met with fierce opposition, which resulted in the suspension of the reform of the Military Service Act for the time being. If you’re wondering how Jin feels about this, he’ll tell you that “I’ve discussed a lot with the corporation about military duty.” I discussed how I planned to entrust as much of it as possible to the company’s care. “I believe that what the corporation has to say is just as good as what I have to say.”

HYBE has requested that the Ministry make a decision

BTS’s readiness to enlist, according to HYBE’s CCO, Lee Jin-hyung, has been taken into consideration, and the company will make a decision when the Military Service Act is altered or not, which is now being considered due to BTS’s participation. As he added, “To put it accurately, military service policy is changing, and it is true that BTS members are experiencing difficulties because it is difficult for them to estimate when they would be required to serve in the military.” Given the difficulty in making arrangements, both the BTS members and the firm are keeping a careful eye on the proposed amendment at this time.

As a result of the constant revisions to the act, he hoped the Ministry would make a decision before the next President took office. “If the issue is passed on to the next National Assembly, the debate will continue without any guarantees, and because it is true that the uncertainty [over BTS’s military service] is making things difficult, we hope that [the National Assembly] will reach a decision as soon as possible,” he said.
