Early years
Tyson Luke Fury was born on August 12, 1988, in the Wythenshawe neighborhood of Manchester. He grew up in a house in Styal with his Irish parents, Amber and John Fury. Fury came into the world three months early and weighed only 1 pound (450 g). His dad, John, named him Tyson after the heavyweight world champion at the time, Mike Tyson. John said: “Doctors told me he didn’t have a good chance of living. I had lost two babies who were born too soon in the same way.” He chose Tyson because he was a fighter and had survived being born early.

Career in amateur boxing
As a non-professional player, Fury played for both England and Ireland. Fury has been an Irish international representative three times. He lived at the Holy Family Boxing Club in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and later moved to the Smithboro Club in County Monaghan, Ireland. In 2007, the Irish team lost a double international match against an experienced Polish team 12–6. However, Fury won both of his fights in Rzeszów and Biaystok. In another match between Ireland and the US, Fury won by knockout. In 2006, he came in third at the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships.
In 2006, he went to the senior national championships in England to fight for Jimmy Egan’s Boxing Academy in Wythenshawe, Manchester, but David Price beat him 22–8.

Furious after his first job in 2008
Fury made his professional debut on December 6, 2008, when he was 20 years old. He fought Hungarian fighter Bela Gyongyosi (3–9–2) on the undercard of Carl Froch vs. Jean Pascal in Nottingham. Fury knocked out Gyongyosi in the first round with a combination of blows to the head and body.
Then, in the next seven months, he fought six more times and won all of them by knockout. He beat Marcel Zeller (21–3), Daniil Peretyatko (15–20), Lee Swaby (23–22–2), Matthew Ellis (20–6–1), Scott Belshaw (10–1), and Aleksandrs Selezens (3–6).
Fury fought John McDermott (25–5, 16 KOs) for the English heavyweight title on September 11, 2009, and won by a points decision. Fury was a 1–6 favorite going into the fight, but he didn’t do well, and the referee’s 98–92 decision was criticized as a “travesty.” The decision led the British Boxing Board of Control to require three judges for all English titles, and the board ordered a rematch.
Fury beat Tomas Mrazek (4–22–5) and Hans-Jörg Blasko (9–3) twice more before facing McDermott again on June 25, 2010. In the second fight, Fury knocked McDermott down three times, once in the eighth round and twice in the ninth round, to win by technical knockout (TKO). In the process, Fury won the English heavyweight title for the second time. After those two, he beat American fighters Rich Power (12-0) and Zack Page (21-32-2) by points in two 8-round matches, and in the 5th round, he knocked out Brazilian Marcelo Luiz Nascimento (13-0) with a punch.
