Chara switched to eating only plants. He no longer eats beef, chicken, pork, or dairy, which are the usual fat and protein sources for NHL players. He sometimes eats salmon and eggs, but mostly he eats fruit, quinoa, brown rice, beans, chickpeas, lentils, salad, avocados, nuts, and seeds.

Getting a job
After not being picked in 1995, the New York Islanders took Chára in the third round of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. He was the 56th player taken. He played his first season in North America with the Prince George Cougars of the Western Hockey League (WHL). The Cougars then picked Chára in that year’s CHL Import Draft. Chára played for the Islanders for four seasons and became a reliable, stay-at-home defender who mostly played defense. He became known as a tough player to play against because he was intimidating, strong, and a hard hitter who could sometimes fight. His strength also gave him a very hard slap shot that seemed to get better each season, even though the Islanders never put Chára in an offensive role. During the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, the Ottawa Senators got Chára as part of a deal to get forward Alexei Yashin. At the time, people thought the trade would help the Islanders a lot, even though they were never a good team when Chára played there. Bill Muckalt and the second overall pick in that year’s draft, which the Senators used to pick Jason Spezza, were also traded for Chára. The Islanders were going to trade Chára to the Boston Bruins for Jason Allison, but the deal fell through because it would have involved Dave Scatchard, who they liked because he visited sick kids in the hospital.
Ottawa Senators (2001–2006)
The Senators knew from watching Chára that he would be a good defender. They also knew that each year he grew into his body and got better at what he did. But Chára grew in ways that were better than anyone could have imagined. In his first year with Ottawa (2001–2002), he scored 10 goals and had 23 points, which were both new career highs. He also became a real two-way defenseman. His strong slapshot kept getting better, so Ottawa started putting him on the power play to use it, which was something the Islanders rarely did. It led to four of Chára’s goals that season being scored when he had an extra player. The next year, in 2002–03, Chára started to become one of the best NHL defensemen. He set new career highs with 30 assists and 39 points, and he and Wade Redden became two of Ottawa’s best defenders. He also made it to his first NHL All-Star Game, where he had the second hardest shot in the Skills Competition, behind Al MacInnis.
In 2003–04, Chára scored 16 goals and had 41 points, both of which were career highs. He also had the third best plus-minus rating in the NHL, behind Martin St. Louis and Marek Malk, which got him nominated for the James Norris Memorial Trophy for the first time. Even though Scott Niedermayer was the best defenseman in the NHL, he was also on the First All-Star Team.
After the NHL lockout in 2004–05, Chára played in the Swedish Elitserien for Farjestad BK. In his next NHL season, he scored 16 goals and 43 points, which was enough to make the NHL Second All-Star Team. Ottawa could have lost its two best defensemen, Chára and Redden, at the end of the season. Because of money, the Senators could only sign one of them, so they chose Redden. Since Chára and Ottawa couldn’t agree on a new deal, he was a free agent at the end of the 2005–06 season. Choosing Redden over Chára was a mistake, because Redden’s play went down while Chára became one of the best defensemen in the league.
