Early years
Long was born in Brooklyn, New York City, to a teacher and printmaker named Talita Long (née Gillman) and a high school teacher and poet named Doughtry Long. Her mother’s family is from Trinidad. Sommore, an actress and comedian who is a year older than her, is her older half-sister.
When Long was two, her parents split up. When her mother moved to Iowa City, Iowa, to study fine arts, she went with her. When Long was seven, her mother moved to South Los Angeles, where she planned to get married. She and her fiance called off the wedding, but Talita decided to stay in Los Angeles.
