Milly Alcock Bio/Wiki

It’s a good thing that Milly Alcock doesn’t mind swearing, because the first scene of Upright, the Australian drama she starred in with actor and comedian Tim Minchin last December, required her to use profanity.

“I remember reading it and being like, ‘Fuck, yeah.’ I think I say ‘fuck’ six times,'” she says with a laugh while talking to Vogue in her hometown of Sydney. “I swear a lot in real life, but not like my character Meg does when she wants to get away from something. I think casual swearing is a very Australian thing to do.”

Her part as an outcast Meg in the local production that was a big hit was not Alcock’s first role, but it was the first one that got her noticed, and rightly so. She was in the TV shows Pine Gap in 2018 and The Reckoning in 2019, and she also had a part in Seven’s A Place To Call Home. But in Upright, Alcock spent most of her screen time with Minchin, 44, who also co-produced, co-wrote, and did all the music for the project. Minchin is known around the world as a talented composer and lyricist (he wrote the lyrics for Matilda the Musical). He played Lucky Flynn, a fellow outsider who ends up in Meg’s life by accident and has to travel through the Australian outback with her and an upright piano.

The result was an eight-part series with a sharp tongue that became Foxtel’s most popular new drama of 2019 and has since been shown in the UK and Canada.

“Meg is a three-dimensional character with a lot of depth and grit. “Like Lucky’s, her story unfolds as she travels through Australia, and we get to see her grow,” Alcock says. “The relationship between the two is very interesting and hasn’t been explored in Australian drama before.”

The chemistry between the two characters was important to the success of the show, and Alcock says she was “so nervous” and “scared the whole time” before her screen test. She even stopped herself from Googling Minchin so she wouldn’t find out about his impressive CV.

Alcock’s plan for the audition worked, and Minchin later said that the young actor he was working with was “a really special talent.” Even though at first it wasn’t clear that she would take the part. The young actor had to choose between playing Meg in the movie Upright or finishing year 12 at Sydney’s Newtown High School of the Performing Arts. This was because Upright was going to be filmed for close to three months in remote areas of Australia.

“I knew that this chance would be so much more valuable than getting my piece of paper,” she says of her decision to quit school. “I never had a second of doubt. I almost did something too quickly. I said, “No, this is what I’ve been working for, and I’m lucky to have this great chance with this great cast and this beautiful script.” I couldn’t say no, and I couldn’t let the worry and fear of not finishing school keep me up at night because that would have made leaving pointless.”

Alcock is already on track to have a big year in 2020. The Gloaming is the next Australian drama. It was filmed in Tasmania and stars Emma Booth and Ewen Leslie, who are also both Australian. “I was very lucky to be able to go to Tassie, another beautiful part of Australia. I play Jenny McGinty, and when she is killed, Ewen Leslie and Emma Booth’s characters start to look into what happened.

There are no plans to move to Hollywood right now, but Alcock is working on her American accent, which she learned on the set of The Reckoning. She still lives at home with her parents and two brothers, and she says that they are more of an athletic family than a creative one. Alcock says with a laugh, “I think I became interested in acting because everyone else wasn’t.” “I grew up in a house where rugby union was the main sport. It doesn’t make sense.”

She also knows that she looks a lot younger than her 19 years, which she thinks is both good and bad. “Hollywood has made it seem like people between the ages of 17 and 18 should look like they are 25. This is not true. So we kind of think that if you’re a certain age, you have to look a certain way, which is not true for a lot of people. Looking younger is bittersweet. It does have some pros, but it also has cons, like when people treat you like you’re younger and don’t respect you as much because of that.

Even though industry insiders in her area say she’s “one to watch,” Alcock says she’s more interested in “riding the wave” than getting ahead of herself. “I’m still young, I’m still at home. She says, “This is the first big response I’ve gotten to anything I’ve done, so I feel a little out of my depth right now.” “I’ve always been hypnotized by movies, and every time I watched one, I felt like I couldn’t handle it. It made me feel strange. I had the feeling that this is what I have to do for the rest of my life because of that intuition. I’m glad I’ve taken steps to do that, too.”
