Bersten was born there and grew up there. His family has Russian roots. He began dancing when he was 7.
In 2018, Bersten was on tour with Dancing With The Stars when he started to feel a lot of pain in his stomach. A blood test showed that he had signs of hyperparathyroidism, which is caused by a tumor on one of his parathyroid glands. The next day, he had surgery to take out his left parathyroid.
