When it premiered on Showtime in 2000, ‘Queer as Folk’ startled the globe and went on to become one of the most revolutionary series of our generation. The series depicted how members of the LGBTQ+ community deal with challenges in their daily lives and how they are treated unfairly in society. The show returns for a second season on Peacock with new characters and a new storyline, 22 years later. The fundamental theme of the novel, however, is how society continues to reject members of the LGBTQ+ community.
This, however, is not the case. Because of a catastrophic tragedy that alters everything, the characters go through a lot this time. Mingus (Fin Argus) is getting set to join a drag club in episode 1 of the Peacock series. He’s nervous, but some of his new pals are encouraging him to acquire confidence. He prepares for the show by setting fire to the stage. When he sees something that terrifies him, though, everything changes.
Inside the Babylon nightclub, we find a man with an automatic gun wreaking mayhem by shooting people without thinking. Multiple people are killed in the incident, and Brodie, one of the main characters on the program, is hurt while saving Mingus from the bullet. The destruction caused by the shooting is evident in the chaotic scenes inside and outside the club. Several people were injured, and a large number of people died as a result of the catastrophe.
The entire scenario in the premiere transports us to 2016, when a similar shooting incident occurred in real life. Yes, the gunshot scene in the first episode of ‘Queer as Folk’ is based on a real-life shooting that horrified the country.

What went down at Pulse Nightclub? Inside the US’s bloodiest attack on the LGBTQ+ community
On June 12, 2016, Omar Mateen, armed with a SIG Sauer MGX semi-automatic rifle and a 9mm Glock 12 semi-automatic pistol, opened fire at a homosexual nightclub called Pulse. More than 300 people were present at the time, and the club’s last round of beverages was served at 2 a.m. He walked into the club from the south and began shooting patrons.
Officer Adam Gruler attempted to defuse the situation by shooting at the assailant. The shooting, however, forced him back into the club, where he continued to murder others. He walked deeper into the club and initiated a hostage scenario when two additional police officers arrived on the scene. Mateen fired at than 200 shots in those five minutes, according to sources, pausing only to reload.

More than 100 officers were called to the scene a short time afterwards. Mateen called a news station about 2:45 a.m. and informed them that he was the shooter and that he was acting on behalf of ISIS. He also said that the United States bombarded Syria, which he claimed was one of the reasons for the shooting. Meanwhile, police officers entered the club, and it was verified that the shooter was dead about 5:17 a.m.
Fifty people were killed in the attack, including Omar Mateen, while another 58 were injured, 53 by gunfire and five by other means. After the 2017 Las Vegas incident, this is the second-deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter in US history.

There were some who claimed it was a hate crime committed against the LGBTQ community. Mateen, on the other hand, is said to have done all of this as a result to the way the US bombed Iraq and Syria.
