Plot of “The Summer I Turned Pretty”

The Summer I Turned Pretty is based on Jenny Han’s (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before) book series and directed by Erica Dunton, Jeff Chan, and Jesse Peretz. It tells the coming-of-age story of Isabel “Belly” Conklin. Rachel Blanchard, Jackie Chung, Christopher Briney, Gavin Casalegno, Sean Kaufman, Minnie Mills, and Alfredo Narciso star as Belly in the series.

Every year, Belly and her family travel to Cousins Beach for the summer, where they swim in the pool beneath the stars, play in the ocean, and work at the local country club. Belly is 16 this summer and moving out of her uncomfortable early adolescent stage, and everyone has noticed, from Susannah Fisher, Belly’s mother’s best friend, who hosts them every year, to Susannah’s brothers, Jeremiah and Conrad Fisher. Belly’s study of the changes in her relationships with Jeremiah and Conrad, as well as her transition from naive teen to capable adult, was the center of the three-book series that preceded the show. A second season of the show has already been ordered.
