The foundation of Roderick “R. J.” Hampton Jr.’s successful basketball career was laid by his mother and father. Since the very beginning, his father, who has served as his full-time coach, has instilled in him all of the fundamentals of the game and has been his most reliable source of support.

Before entering his name into consideration for the NBA draft, Roderick was a member of the New Zealand Breakers of the National Basketball League (NBL). On May 28, 2019, Hampton reached an agreement to sign a multi-year contract with the New Zealand Breakers of the National Basketball League (NBL), an Australian team. The clause in the contract gives Hampton the option to transfer to the National Basketball Association in the future (NBA).

As a five-star prospect coming out of Little Elm High School in Little Elm, Texas, the Milwaukee Bucks selected him with the 24th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

R.J. Hampton, a basketball player for the National Basketball Association (NBA), was brought up in Dallas, Texas, by his parents, Roderick Hampton Sr. and Markita Hampton. Since he was a young boy, the man who is now 21 years old has been instructed by his father.

The consistent presence of his family at Mairangi Bay ensures that there is always a whiff of Texas there. R.J.’s mother is arguably the most famous fan of basketball, and she does not miss a single game. It means everything to each and every member of the Hampton family, including R.J.

Because his father is R.J.’s full-time coach, R.J. learns everything he knows about basketball from his father; Sr. Hampton is significantly more knowledgeable than his son.

It is largely due to the efforts of his father that he is recognized as a prominent figure in the sporting world. Additionally, he was a part of the United States national under-16 basketball team that won the 2017 FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship and took home the gold medal.

He participated in five contests and recorded nine points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists while he was on the court.

A foot injury prevented him from participating in two of the tournament’s games, but he still managed to win another gold medal while playing for the national under-17 team at the 2018 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup.

Hampton averaged 7.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game. They also committed 1.5 steals per game.

This past September saw the passing of his grandmother.

On Instagram, Hampton informed his audience of the passing of his grandmother by posting a number of photographs of her throughout her life. He referred to his devoted grandmother, who he called “MeMe,” as a superwoman and the person he loved the most.

In a similar manner, he posted the message to his profile, which was made public on September 1st, 2022. In the comments section, his friends and followers have expressed their condolences to his grandmother who recently passed away.

R.J.’s father, Rod, who played collegiate basketball at nearby SMU from 1987 to 1991, has served as R.J.’s AAU coach and trainer for the majority of R.J.’s childhood. Rod played basketball at SMU from 1987 to 1991.

According to prominent members of the local media, his father made fun of R.J.’s move during the game in 2018, stating that it was the worst possible move that an opposing team could make. Rod joined in on the conversation that was going on among the Redhawks fans after R.J. scored 29 points in the game that they were playing against Liberty.

Even worse, he insisted that they had no idea what they were doing, which further compounded the problem.

He asserted that the two of them had to put in a lot of effort together in order for RJ to become the player he is today, which was the thing that made him the most proud as RJ’s father.

There have been times when being his father and coaching him in basketball have been in conflict with one another, but the Hamptons have found a way to work around this challenge as R.J. has developed over the years.

RJ Hampton’s Family

R.J.’s mother Markita, his brother Ryan, and his father Rod, who played basketball in college, never miss a game or a practice for him. R.J.’s father Rod was also a basketball player in college.

When it comes to cheering on their son on the basketball court, the Hamptons are never too far away. In a similar manner, his mother Markita, who is active on Twitter, has posted a number of photographs on her page demonstrating how pleased she is with her son’s achievements and the profession he has chosen.

Since the beginning of his freshman season at Little Elm High School in Little Elm, Texas, Hampton has competed on the school’s varsity basketball team.

On November 17, 2016, he played in his first high school game, and his team won 78-52 against Naaman Forest High School. He led all scorers with 33 points in that game, which they won.

Hampton averaged 23.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 3.5 steals in his first season with Little Elm, during which the team finished with a record of 29-5 and won the District 14-5A championship.

R.J. Hampton’s Professional Career

On May 28, 2019, Hampton reached an agreement to sign a multi-year contract with the New Zealand Breakers of the National Basketball League (NBL), an Australian team. The clause in the contract gives Hampton the option to transfer to the National Basketball Association in the future (NBA).

According to him, he chose not to play collegiate basketball because he wanted to “live like a pro, play with grown men, and not have to balance books and basketball.” He also wanted to avoid having to worry about balancing basketball and academics.

Hampton became a member of the Breakers after participating in the NBL Next Stars program, which aims to develop players into NBA draft prospects.

On his first game with a professional team, which took place on September 20 against Melbourne United, he scored 11 points, grabbed three rebounds, and dished out four assists in a total of 21 minutes of play.

Two days later, on Sunday, he set a new season high with 20 points, five rebounds, and three steals in a game that was ultimately a loss to the South East Melbourne Phoenix.

The rematch took place on January 5, 2020, and Hampton emerged victorious by an 11-point margin over South East Melbourne. On February 4, he parted ways with the Breakers so that he could go back to his hometown and begin preparing for the NBA draft in 2020.

RJ Hampton’s Was Denver Nuggets 2020 NBA Draft

During the 2020 NBA Draft, the Milwaukee Bucks selected Hampton with the 24th overall pick in the draft.

However, on November 24, 2020, the Denver Nuggets were one of the four teams involved in a trade that resulted in the acquisition of Hampton’s draft rights by the Denver Nuggets. The other two teams involved in the trade were the Oklahoma City Thunder and the New Orleans Pelicans.

On December 1, 2020, the Denver Nuggets made an announcement regarding the possibility of signing Hampton. He played for the Nuggets in a total of 25 games and, on average, contributed 9.3 minutes, 2.6 points, and 2.0 rebounds per game.

Last season, Hampton was acquired by the Orlando Magic in a trade.

On March 25, 2021, the Orlando Magic made a trade that resulted in the acquisition of Aaron Gordon and Gary Clark in exchange for Hampton, Gary Harris, and a potential first-round selection.

On April 4, when the team played the Denver Nuggets, Hampton was given the opportunity to make his debut in the NBA by being selected to start the game. He finished the game with 16 points, four rebounds, and three assists while playing 33 minutes.

In a similar vein, on May 17, 2021, he was awarded the Rookie of the Month title for the Eastern Conference for the month of May.

He joined the ranks of other Magic players who have won Rookie of the Month awards, including Shaquille O’Neal, Anfernee Hardaway, Mike Miller, Victor Oladipo, and Elfrid Payton. Dennis Scott was also a member of the Magic who won the award.
