Pete Townshend’s Childhood and Early Years of Education

Townshend was born in the Chiswick Hospital on Netheravon Road in Chiswick, which is located in west London. His mother, Betty (née Dennis), was a singer with the Sydney Torch and Les Douglass Orchestras, and his father, Cliff Townshend, was a professional alto saxophonist in the dance band the Squadronaires of the Royal Air Force. He comes from a musical family.  The Townshends’ union was fraught with tension due to the fact that both of them were heavy drinkers and possessed fiery tempers. While Betty Townshend had extramarital affairs with other men, Cliff Townshend was frequently absent from his family since he was touring with his band.

Townshend was taken to live with his maternal grandmother Emma Dennis, who Pete later described as being “clinically mad.” This occurred when Townshend was a young child after his parents divorced and he was forced to live with his grandmother. Young Pete was overjoyed to see his parents once again after a separation of two years, which ended when Cliff and Betty bought a house together on Woodgrange Avenue in Acton, a neighborhood that is considered to be middle class. Many of his father’s closest friends were Jewish, and his neighborhood had a Polish population that made up one-third of the total. Upstairs, there lived a dedicated Jewish family who shared their house with them as well as their food.

Townshend claims that he did not have many friends when he was a child, and as a result, he spent a significant portion of his youth reading adventure stories such as Gulliver’s Travels and Treasure Island.

He looked forward to the vacations his family took to the Isle of Man and other coastal destinations. It was on one of these travels in the summer of 1956 that he first saw the film Rock Around the Clock, which is often credited with igniting his interest in rock and roll music from the United States. Almost immediately after that, he went to watch Bill Haley perform in London, which was Townshend’s first concert. At the time, he did not envision himself pursuing a career as a professional musician; rather, he desired to become a journalist. Now, however, he is pursuing both careers.

Townshend was accepted into Acton County Grammar School when he achieved a passing score on the eleven-plus examination.

Due to the size of his nose, he was regularly the target of bullying at Acton County, an event that had a significant and lasting impact on him.

For Christmas in 1956, his great-grandmother Emma gave him an inexpensive Spanish-style guitar. This was his very first instrument.

Although his father did teach him a few of chords on the guitar, Townshend learnt to play the instrument primarily on his own and was never taught how to read music.

Townshend and John Entwistle, a school buddy of Townshend’s, founded a traditional jazz ensemble called the Confederates. Townshend played the banjo in the group, and Entwistle played the horns.

The Confederates covered songs by Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball, and Lonnie Donegan during their performances at the Congo Club, which was a youth club operated by the Acton Congregational Church.

Despite this, both were swayed by the growing popularity of rock ‘n’ roll; Townshend was particularly taken with Cliff Richard’s debut single, which was titled “Move It.” After getting into an argument with the group’s drummer Chris Sherwin, Townshend quit the Confederates and went to his mother’s antique shop to buy a “pretty excellent Czechoslovakian guitar.” This led to the formation of the band The Who.

Paul and Simon Townshend, who are Townshend’s brothers, were born in 1957 and 1960, respectively.

Pete was forced to choose between going to music school, art school, or getting a job because he did not have the grades necessary to enroll in university. In the end, he made the decision to enroll at Ealing Art College in order to study graphic design. He did so in the year 1961.

Ronnie Wood, who would later become a member of the Rolling Stones, was one of Townshend’s classmates at Ealing. Distinguished artists and designers, such as the pioneer of auto-destructive art Gustav Metzger, presented their work and shared their knowledge at the college.  In 1964, Townshend decided to devote his entire life to music and dropped out of school.
