Dutch racing driver Nick de Vries, 27, competes in Formula One for Williams Racing. His longtime partner Eva Bruggenwirth and he are still together.

De Vries will make his racing debut at the Italian Grand Prix in 2022 as the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team’s backup driver.

He won the 2010–11 Karting World Championships, the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2019, and the Formula E World Championship in 2020–21. From January 2010 to May 2019, the Dutch racer was a part of the McLaren Young Driver Program. He participated in the Audi Sport Racing Academy from October 2016 until August 2019.

The 27-year-old driver will make his Formula One debut for Williams at this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix after Alex Albon was diagnosed with appendicitis.

Due to Albon’s Saturday morning illness, the Aston Martin driver from Friday’s practise has been substituted at the last minute.

For his final Formula E season in 2022, De Vries remained with Mercedes. In Diriyah, he won the first race of season eight. The next day, he took the pole, ended in 10th, and finished the championship in eighth place with 106 points.

Eva Bruggenwirth, Nyck de Vries’ girlfriend, works as a social media and content assistant

The current girlfriend of Dutch racer Nyck de Vries is Eva Bruggenwirth, who is also from the Netherlands. She works for Anna + Nina as a Social Media & Content Assistant, according to her Instagram and LinkedIn profiles.

Early Career

Karting

De Vries won both the German Junior Championship and the WSK World Series for the KF3 division in 2008. He won the European KF3 Championship and kept his WSK World Series and German Junior championships in 2009. He won the 2010 Karting World Championship in September. 2011 saw him win the World Championship as well.

Eurocup Formula Renault

2012

De Vries made the jump to single-seaters in 2012 and was awarded a cockpit in the R-ace GP Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0. De Vries finished second in his maiden race at Alcaiz, earning his first podium finish, and he was able to duplicate this performance at the Hungaroring. De Vries beat out all of his teammates to finish the season in fifth place. De Vries also competed in a number of Formula Renault 2.0 NEC events, winning one of them at his home track in Assen. In his eleven series starts, he made the podium four times, and he finished tenth in the drivers’ standings.

2013

De Vries changed to Koiranen GP for his second season in the series the following year. He finished the season in fifth place in the championship, winning one race each at the Hungaroring and the Circuit de Catalunya.

2014

De Vries continued to play with Koiranen in 2014 and participated in the Eurocup for the third time. In 11 of the 14 races, he placed on the podium after winning six of them. He easily defeated the runner-up Dennis Olsen in the championship with 254 points to 124. He also competed in the whole Alpine Formula Renault campaign. Only twice did he not place on the podium while winning 10 of the 14 races.

Renault Formula One 3.5 Series

De Vries switched to the Formula Renault 3.5 Series in 2015 and competed for DAMS. Prior to winning the season-ending race at the Circuito de Jerez, he finished third in the final standings with 160 points, only behind Oliver Rowland and Matthieu Vaxivière. He had previously finished on the podium five times.

Series GP

De Vries raced for ART Grand Prix in the GP3 Series in 2016. He finished third at the Red Bull Ring to earn his first podium finish, and he later won his first pole position in Budapest. His first victory didn’t come until the second race at Monza, a feat he repeated at the Yas Marina Circuit at the end of the campaign. Behind his teammates Charles Leclerc and Alexander Albon, who won the championship and the vice-championship, he placed in sixth place.

Formula 2 World Championship

2017

De Vries changed teams in 2017 and joined Rapax in the FIA Formula 2 Championship. In the sprint race in Monte Carlo, he won for the first time, and before the summer break, he added three more podium finishes. De Vries switched to Racing Engineering prior to the race at Spa-Francorchamps, where he finished in second place. He finished the season in the championship in seventh place, second among all rookies.

2018

With only two podium finishes in the first three races of the season, his campaign got off to a sluggish start, leaving him well behind his title competitors. A pointless round in Austria and two finishes outside the top five at Silverstone followed De Vries’ first victory of the season in the sprint race at Le Castellet. But after that, the Dutch driver’s performance picked up, as he won the main events in Hungary and Belgium, respectively. De Vries was beaten by Alex Albon and Lando Norris by ten and 17 points, respectively, in the standings after taking his sixth podium of the year in the Sochi feature race.

2019

De Vries remains in Formula 2 in 2019 and joined 2018 GP3 vice-champion Nikita Mazepin at his old team, ART Grand Prix. With a podium finish in Baku and a sprint race victory in Barcelona, his season got off to a fantastic start. He then won the title by winning the major race at Le Castellet after starting from pole position in Monaco. De Vries’ lead was increased by a couple of third-place finishes at the Red Bull Ring, a podium at each of Silverstone and Budapest, and after a further pair of third-place finishes in Monza, he had one hand on the trophy. De Vries was declared the season’s mathematical winner after his fourth and final victory, which came at the penultimate race in Sochi.

World Endurance Championship by the FIA

De Vries signed with Racing Team Nederland on March 15th, 2018 to compete in the LMP2 division. On October 6, 2019, he and this squad scored their maiden victory in this class at the 6 Hours of Fuji. De Vries drove the final stint and brought the vehicle home.

De Vries was introduced as the test and backup driver for Toyota Gazoo Racing Europe GmbH on July 6, 2020. He performs testing on Toyota’s hypercar as well as the TS050 hybrid.

The ACO officials forbade Philippe Cimadomo, a driver for TDS Racing x Vaillante, from starting during the test week leading up to the 2022 24 hours of Le Mans. He was requested to fill in because he was already on the track due to his reserve position with the Toyota Hypercar squad. The car was switched from Pro/Am to Pro due to Philippe Cimadomo’s bronze classification and De Vries’ platinum rank.
