Monogatari: Plot, Premiere Date, Cast, Trailer, Filming Location, Review, Where to Watch & More

The Monogatari series by Nishio is undoubtedly one of the most intriguing anime you’ll ever get the opportunity to see. Mystery, romance, and the supernatural are the subgenres that are officially associated with it, but in practice, it is a hybrid of virtually any subgenre that exists. You name it, Monogatari has it: comedic, terrifying, action-packed, and psychological elements. Although it’s an odd combination, the show finds a way to strike a good balance.

Nonetheless, seeking the Monogatari watch order most suitable for you can be a living hell. The only real problem with the show is that it can be challenging to follow. Different names have been given to each of Monogatari’s four seasons. For instance, the first season is named Bakemonogatari (which translates to “Ghost Tale”), the second season is called Nisemonogatari (which translates to “Fake Tale”), and so on. The titles need to hint at which season will follow the previous one.

Another problem is that there are dozens of different ways to watch the show, and the order in which events occur in the narrative could be more apparent. It can be challenging to get into the show, but you shouldn’t worry about it because this watch order guide should fix all of your difficulties.

The events are not presented in chronological order, but that is not a problem because the show’s producers meant it to be that way. Because of this, the mysteries will make sense, and you won’t be spoiled by the fact that particular past, present, and future occurrences contain information you have yet intended to know.

Monogatari’s Plot

Monogatari (“Story”) is the name of a series of light novels published in Japan. Nisio Isin is the author, and Vofan is the illustrator. The story revolves around Koyomi Araragi, a third-year high school student who survives an attack by vampires and finds himself helping girls involved with various apparitions, deities, ghosts, beasts, spirits, and other supernatural phenomena. These often serve as proxies for the girls’ emotional and mental issues. Koyomi Araragi is the protagonist of the story. In total, 28 volumes of the series were released by Kodansha under the Kodansha Box imprint between November 2006 and August 2021. The suffix -Monogatari is utilized for all tale arcs in this series.

Since 2009, Shaft has provided many episodes of the Monogatari series with animation. The first season of the anime adaptation features thirty episodes, initially shown in Japan anywhere from July 2009 to December 2012 on various television networks. The second season has a total of 28 episodes, aired between July and December 2013, and the third and final season has a total of 42 episodes, which will be aired between December 2014 and June 2019. Kizumonogatari is the title of a prequel anime film trilogy distributed in 2016 and 2017. In March 2018, a manga version of Bakemonogatari was illustrated by Oh! Fantastic and given the title Bakemonogatari, began serialization in the Weekly Shonen Magazine published by Kodansha.

The majority of the heroines each have an item that represents their specter, such as Hitagi’s stapler (which resembles the claw of a crab), Mayoi’s backpack (which resembles the shell of a snail), Suruga’s arm (which reaches the arm of a monkey), Nadeko’s hat and jacket (which resemble the head and skin of a snake), and Karen’s black and yellow tracksuit. Synopsis Setting (the colors of a bee). Although it contains aspects of fantasy, horror, and action, the series concentrates mainly on the interactions and discussions between its characters. These exchanges significantly use the wordplay and meta-humor that are Nisio Isin’s trademarks.

The story of Koyomi Araragi, a third-year high school student who has almost fully regained his humanity after briefly transforming into a vampire during spring break, is told from the perspective of the Monogatari series. One day, his fellow student Hitagi Senjgahara, known for keeping to herself, tumbles down a flight of stairs at school and lands in Koyomi’s arms. To his utter astonishment, he finds out that Hitagi weighs nearly nothing, which is contrary to the laws of physics. Despite being warned to stay away, Koyomi offers his assistance and introduces her to Meme Oshino, a peculiar middle-aged man living in a defunct cram school who is responsible for Koyomi’s transformation back into a human. Meme Oshino was the one who helped Koyomi cure his vampirism. After assisting Hitagi in finding a solution to his situation, Koyomi decides to become his girlfriend.

As the story continues, Koyomi becomes involved with other girls who suffer from “oddities” (kai, lit. “strangeness”), including a child by the name of Mayoi Hachikuji, his underclassman Suruga Kanbaru, Nadeko Sengoku, a friend of his sisters, Tsubasa Hanekawa, his classmate, and his own younger sisters Karen and Tsukihi. His younger Koyomi relies on supernatural guidance from Oshino and, later on, from Shinobu, the once-powerful blonde vampire who attacked him and later assumed the appearance of an eight-year-old girl, to deal with the apparitions, which feed on human emotions and often take forms that animals symbolically represent. Koyomi does this to combat the shades, which provide on human emotions and often take states symbolically represented by animals.

Production of Monogatari

Since Nisio Isin’s earlier work, the Zaregoto series, was published as a light novel, he decided to create the first Monogatari short story, “Hitagi Crab,” with a more serious tone in mind.

It was not a straightforward progression from light books to more severe works of writing; instead, it was an experiment to determine whether or not he could create a light novel that did not have illustrations. However, by the time they got to the third story in the series, “Suruga Monkey,” it had been determined that illustrations would be included in the publication, so he modified his method to account for that. According to what he has said, the atmosphere of Nisemonogatari was different from that of Kizumonogatari because he was aware that the later work would be made into an anime.

Check Out the Monogatari Movies and the Shorts

The majority of anime movies do not have a significant impact on the overarching story, and some of them are not even considered canon and can be disregarded entirely. Nevertheless, the films Monogatari are indispensable. The first three Kizumonogatari movies serve as a prequel to the entire series and provide essential information on how Koyomi became a vampire and his relationship with Shinobu and Hanekawa. These movies also feature Koyomi’s appearances before he turned into a vampire.

Only the final two episodes of the Koyomimonogatari shorts are necessary to understand what happens in the story. Despite this, the remaining portion is entertaining and contributes very little to the level.

Where To Watch Monogatari?

Finding a location where you can view Monogatari can be almost as terrifying as determining the correct order to watch the episodes. No legal streaming provider offers access to all of the shows in the series because of the massive number of shows that make up the series.

Netflix is the service that, as of right now, has the most episodes of Monogatari available, but things are more complex than that. You will need to select a different region to watch certain portions of the show because such parts are unavailable in all locations. You can move areas using a virtual private network (VPN) and check to see if the season you are now watching is available in the new region.

Amazon Prime, Crunchyroll, and Funimation are other streaming services that provide Monogatari. However, they will miss one or two seasons, so you must transfer services multiple times.

Zoku Owarmonogatari’s Production

There is also a season of Zoku Owarmonogatari that does not exist on any legal streaming provider because it was never produced. To watch all of Monogatari lawfully, you must purchase it on Blu-ray, as this is the only format available. It will take more time, but once you have the show, you will only have to spend time searching for the other seasons to watch it all in one sitting.
