After that, he attended Loyola University Maryland and received a degree in history from there in 1994. During his time there, he was also a member of the Loyola Greyhounds men’s basketball team from 1989 to 1993. He was a member of the roster for 107 contests and started 39 of them as a point guard. Malone averaged 18.5 minutes per game over his four years with the Greyhounds, during which time he racked up a total of 370 points, 279 assists, and 79 steals.

Michael Malone’s Career in Coaching

Malone worked as an assistant high school basketball coach at Friends School of Baltimore while he was finishing up his degree at Loyola University Maryland.

Following his graduation from Loyola, Malone accepted a position as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team at Oakland University, where he worked under the direction of head coach Greg Kampe.

Prior to receiving a job offer from the Providence College coach Pete Gillen, Malone was on the verge of beginning his training to become a member of the Michigan State Police.

Between the years 1995 and 1998, Malone worked as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team at Providence. Malone served as the director of men’s basketball administration at the University of Virginia during the 1998–1999 basketball season.

Later on, he served as a coaching associate for the New York Knicks in the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the year 2001. In this role, he collaborated with players, coaching staff, personnel, and the video coordinator, and he also edited scouting reports. Malone was given the position of assistant coach by the Knicks in the year 2003. Later in his career, Malone worked as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers from the years 2005 until 2010. During his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Malone was an integral part of the coaching staff that led the team to a franchise record 66–16 record and the best record in the NBA in the 2007–2008 season.

Malone also participated in the 2007 NBA Finals. During the 2010–2011 basketball season, Malone worked as an assistant coach for the New Orleans Hornets. With Malone serving as an assistant coach for the Hornets, the team achieved the best defensive improvement of the season and qualified for the playoffs in 2011 by allowing 8.7 fewer points per game than the previous season.

Warriors of the Golden State (2011–2013)

Malone was signed by the Golden State Warriors to serve as an assistant coach under the direction of Mark Jackson during the summer of 2011.

During the 2012–13 season, the Warriors went from having a record of 23–43 to finishing with a record of 47–35, which earned the team a spot in the playoffs for the first time since 2007.

In the first round of the 2013 NBA Playoffs, the Warriors earned the sixth seed and shocked the third-seeded Denver Nuggets. However, in the following round, they were eliminated by the San Antonio Spurs in six games. The Spurs went on to win the Western Conference championship.

According to reports, Malone was the highest-paid assistant coach in the National Basketball Association for the 2011–12 season. In 2012, the general managers of the NBA awarded Malone the title of greatest assistant coach in the league. After Malone’s departure, several members of the Warriors, including Draymond Green and Stephen Curry, have expressed their gratitude to Malone for his contributions to the team’s success.

Golden State Warriors (2013–2014)

Malone became the next head coach of the Sacramento Kings on June 3, 2013, after being selected for the position by majority owner Vivek Ranadivé.

With the hire, Malone and his father became the second father-son tandem in the history of the NBA to head coach an NBA franchise, following in the footsteps of Bill Musselman and his son Eric Musselman. After beginning the 2014–15 season with a win–loss record of 11–13, the Kings let him go on December 15, 2014 due to their poor start to the season.

Denver Nuggets (2015–present)

On June 15, 2015, the Denver Nuggets announced their decision to hire him as their new head coach.

Malone guided the Nuggets to a record of 54–28 during the 2018–2019 season, which was good enough for the Nuggets to earn the second seed in the Western Conference, behind only the Golden State Warriors. The Nuggets qualified for the playoffs for the first time in six seasons thanks to their victory over the San Antonio Spurs in the first round, which took place over the course of seven games. However, the Nuggets were eliminated by the Portland Trail Blazers in the semi-finals, which also took place over the course of seven games.

On December 24, 2019, the Nuggets made the announcement that they had reached an agreement with Malone over a contract extension.

The Nuggets would become the first team in the history of the NBA to come back from multiple 3–1 deficits in a single postseason during the 2020 playoffs in the NBA Bubble. They would do this by beating the Utah Jazz and the Los Angeles Clippers in seven games after trailing 3–1 in each series. This would make the Nuggets the first team in league history to accomplish this feat. Despite the remarkable accomplishment, the Denver Nuggets would be eliminated from the Western Conference Finals in five games by the Los Angeles Lakers, who would go on to win the NBA championship.

Malone and the Nuggets came to terms on an extension of his contract extending it for a number of years on March 23, 2022.

Michael Malone is a business executive and entrepreneur who was born in Ireland but currently resides in Australia. He started the telecommunications firm iinet in his parents’ garage in Perth, Western Australia, and went on to become its Managing Director. He was the company’s creator. Before the Internet became widely used in 1993, he was one of the first people to use dial-up Internet connection. Over the course of his career, he has been an advocate for Internet consumer rights and has also taken part in debates about metadata. 2016 saw him take on the role of non-executive director at NBNco, which he was given only lately.

The company outgrew its suburban home in 1995 and moved to office accommodation in the CBD. Despite this, the company’s early growth during the Internet boom was hampered by Telstra’s ability to cope with the demand of needed telephone lines (Telstra did not release Bigpond as an Internet Service Provider until 1997) and by the sheer competitive pressure in the Perth market, which had a comparative oversupply of low-cost providers. iiNet was able to enter the Adelaide market with great success in 1996 by using the domain name light.iinet.net.au (which was named after Colonel Light). This was accomplished in partnership with locals John Lindsay and Leigh Hart.
