In addition to working with freight and providing stevedoring services, the company owned by Mahima Mishra is also involved in a variety of other port-related endeavors, such as chartering, intra-port transportation, freight-forwarding, port development, and mining.

OSL Group has also expanded its operations into other sectors, including the hospitality industry, the media production industry, the aviation industry, the education sector, and the healthcare sector.

Mahimananda Mishra’s Business

BHUBANESWAR: The police are investigating whether or not it would be possible to legally seize the properties of business magnate Mahimananda Mishra on the basis that he is suspected of amassing enormous wealth through illegal means. Mishra was arrested from Bangkok on December 25 of last year for allegedly masterminding the murder of Seaways Shipping executive Mahendra Swain at Paradeep on October 26. To date, the Paradeep police in the Jagatsinghpur district have uncovered at least 13 criminal cases against Mishra. Mishra was arrested for this alleged crime after he was taken into custody on December 25 of last year.

It is rumored that Mishra, who is the proprietor of Orissa Stevedores Limited (OSL), possesses assets worth more than Rs 10,000 crore. “We have already placed a freeze on his bank accounts, which hold deposits totaling over 5 crore rupees. We are examining the matter with legal counsel to determine whether or not we may attach all of his property as well as his other bank accounts. We have a very strong suspicion that he acquired the majority of his wealth through unethical means. Although he was involved in a number of companies, stevedoring was his primary line of work. He snatched up multiple contracts for the handling of freight by force. According to a senior police officer who spoke to TOI, “it was apparent from Swain’s murder as Seaways Shipping emerged as a big danger to his business and monopoly.”

Mahima Mishra’s Charges

The police have compiled a compelling case diary against Mishra, who had a substantial amount of clout in the police and power corridor, and they have recently presented it in the district and sessions court. Even though he has been accused of participating in criminal activity as far back as 1995, Mishra has never been arrested or convicted of a crime. In spite of the fact that he was detained in May 1998 in connection with the death of trade union leader Bichitrananda Mallick, he was eventually released on bail.

“We have explained to the court how he established his business empire and how it succeeded despite the fact that he was involved in a large number of lawsuits. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the judge would deny him bail,” the officer stated.

The police said in the case diary that Mishra made a suspicious withdrawal of roughly Rs 80 lakh in cash from his firm accounts on several days between August and September of last year. The officer from the police department stated, “We have a strong suspicion that he was in possession of the enormous amount to materialize the murder of Swain.”

In a parallel turn of events, the local police commissionerate is expected to request Mishra’s custody for questioning in connection with a case that was filed against him in February of 2016. On the basis of a complaint made by Mishra’s rival businessman Pranakrushna Nayak, the Mancheswar police had registered the case against him as well as his associate Basant Bal and Congress leader Arindam Sarkhel, aka Bapi. Nayak claimed that the three of them had thrown bombs on his house on February 26, 2016. The complaint led to the registration of the case against all three of them. Both Bal and Sarkhel were taken into custody in connection with the investigation into Swain’s death. While Sarkhel is still being held by the court, Bal has been receiving medical care at the SCB medical facility in Cuttack while he is in the custody of the police.

According to Nalinikanta Moharana, the public prosecutor of the court, Mahima Mishra submitted a new application for bail before the district and sessions judge of Jagatsinghpur on Friday. Mahima and Basant Bal, the director of OSL, had petitioned the Orissa high court for anticipatory bail before they were taken into custody.

Nevertheless, the supreme court decided not to provide them interim protection.

Other accused parties in this case, Rakesh Chaubey of Jharkhand and Congress politician Bapi Sarkhel, had their requests for bail denied by the district and sessions court of Jagatsinghpur, Mihar Parida, earlier.
