Redskins of Washington
Shanahan left the Texans in 2010 to play for the Washington Redskins alongside his father, Mike Shanahan. Some have questioned if Shanahan’s employment was an instance of unjustified nepotism due to the Washington Redskins’ record during his time in office. After a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in 2012, Shanahan insulted the substitute officials and confronted one of them. He was given a $25,000 fine. Canton Browns
Media outlets claimed that Shanahan had been hired by the Cleveland Browns to serve as their offensive coordinator on February 1, 2014.
Shanahan conducted interviews for the Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Ravens’ open positions as offensive coordinator prior to being hired by the Cleveland Browns. Shanahan left his post as offensive coordinator on January 8, 2015 because of issues with head coach Mike Pettine and perhaps the way the front office was operated.
Falcons of Atlanta
The Atlanta Falcons hired Shanahan as their new offensive coordinator on January 18, 2015.
After finishing 8-8 in 2015, Shanahan’s offense led the league in scoring in 2016, leading the Falcons to an 11-5 record, a division title, and a spot in Super Bowl LI against the New England Patriots. Shanahan received the 2016 NFL Assistant Coach of the Year award.
Shanahan’s play-calling and the Falcons’ execution of those plays helped the Falcons defeat the Patriots 28-3 in Super Bowl LI. The Falcons ultimately lost by a score of 34-28 in overtime, and Shanahan was criticized for being too aggressive by failing to use a ball-control running offense late in the game.
One day after the Super Bowl, on February 6, 2017, Shanahan signed a six-year contract to become the San Francisco 49ers’ new head coach.
On August 11, 2017, Shanahan defeated the Kansas City Chiefs to win his first preseason game 27-17.

The quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo made his 49ers debut three weeks later when he started the 49ers’ 15-14 victory over the Chicago Bears. Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Los Angeles Rams 34-13 on December 31, the final day of the 2017 NFL regular season, capping the campaign with a five-game winning streak and victories in six of the final seven games.
