Because of this, when a bystander found Kaysera’s death on August 29, the police were unaware that she was missing.

He returned right away to look into it and found a young dead girl’s remains. First responders were able to recover the remains and even send it in for an autopsy once they arrived on the site.

Kaysera’s aunt, Dr. Grace Bulltail, told Dateline that this was the third year that she has organised calls for action to demand justice for Kaysera. “Our family has had to fight for themselves at every turn. We continue to struggle to make law enforcement accountable for looking into her murder.
Two years after the 18-year-body old’s was discovered in Hardin, the Big Horn County Attorney Jay Harris made a report about the investigation into her death public in August. The family, however, took issue with the account and told Dateline they were left with more questions than answers.
According to Kaysera’s aunt, the study is more of a character probe into her niece than a live investigation into her death, and she also claims that officials have never thought that she might have been a murder victim.
Kaysera, whom Grace Bulltail considers her daughter, was raised by her grandparents when she was growing up in Big Horn County. Despite the difficulties she had while residing on the reservation, Kaysera, a member of the Crow tribe, is remembered by her aunt as having a loving and sensitive personality.
Grace currently resides in Wisconsin and works as an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Nelson Madison’s Institute for Environmental Studies.
She said to Dateline that due to the alarming amount of Indigenous women who have gone missing and been murdered in the region, life in Big Horn County is like living in a completely separate universe.
She said to Dateline, “If something happens to you there, if something happens to your loved one, you’re on your own.” “No one would hear these women’s experiences if their families remained silent. Nobody would stand up for them. It is up to us to speak for them.
Kaysera from Pretty Places: Disappearance
Grace claimed that their relatives were unaware of Kaysera’s disappearance on August 24, 2019, in Hardin, Montana. They were still unaware on August 29, five days after her death was discovered.
Officials from Big Horn County didn’t inform them that Kaysera’s body had been discovered by a jogger on a home on a backyard corner at the intersection of Mitchell Avenue and Rangeview Drive until September 11, 2019.
Big Horn County Attorney Harris uses witness accounts from four first-hand witnesses in a report that was published in August 2021.
The statements, according to the county attorney, are not “fully consistent,” but they generally describe a sequence of incidents that led to a dispute involving Kaysera and three other individuals—a 17-year-old girl, a 19-year-old woman, and a 23-year-old man—outside of a Rangeview Drive residence at around 3 a.m.
According to the report, a member of Kaysera’s family allegedly informed detectives that Kaysera had been hanging out at the residence on Rangeview Drive and that a resident had bought her alcohol while she was there.
The fight allegedly caused a nearby homeowner to trigger their car alarm in effort to disperse them, according to witness comments included in the report.
They took off in various directions. In the backyard, where her body would later be found, Kaysera was spotted jogging. According to the report, the site is close to the home of the individual who gave her the booze.
According to the article, there is no evidence that demonstrates if Kaysera was in communication with anyone after she was seen leaving the house for the garden, and the precise circumstances of her disappearance are still being looked into.
There was “no evidence of damage or natural disease,” according to an autopsy report that was included in the county attorney’s report.
Alcohol was found in the blood during toxicology tests. Although there were no signs of neck injuries during the examination, suffocation cannot be ruled out as the cause of death.

According to the study, Kaysera had a blood ethanol concentration of 0.149 when she was found on August 29, 2019.
The family has received paperwork that is consistent with this passage, according to Grace, who also noted that it is impossible to rule out asphyxia without also ruling out asphyxia caused by assault. The medical examiners she spoke with about the case, she continued, did not find the blood alcohol levels to be a severe cause for worry.
Grace told Dateline that there doesn’t seem to have been any serious investigation attempts between August 30, 2019, and September 19, 2019, and that there is no proof that officials filed a missing person report with the National Crime Information Center after Kaysera vanished.

But according to the report, on October 1, 2019, the Big Horn County Attorney requested the formation of a Missing and Murdered Persons Task Force to handle all “suspicious deaths or suspected homicides” inside the county that fall under state jurisdiction. The sheriff’s office then restarted significant investigating efforts during the first week of October.
The Kaysera’s death inquiry was handed over to the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office in 2020. As a result of the COVID-19 public health emergency, the report claims that “just a review of the evidence and no additional investigative efforts were made.”
