Jesse Kotansky: Who Is She?

Andrea Petkovic, pronounced [ndrea pêtkoit] (Serbian: ндреа еткoви; romanized: Andrea Petkovi; born September 9, 1987) is a former German professional tennis player.

She was born in Tuzla, SFR Yugoslavia, to a Serbian father and a Bosnian mother. At the age of six months, her family relocated to Germany, and she began her career there in 2006. Petkovic, a former top-10 player, became the first German woman to be ranked inside the top 10 since Steffi Graf in 1999 on October 10, 2011, when she attained a career-high singles ranking of No. 9. She participated in a Premier Mandatory final at the China Open, three Grand Slam quarterfinal matches, and three WTA Tour Championship alternate matches that year.

Petkovic was injured three times in 2012: in her back in January, ankle in August, and knee in December, which kept her out for nine months and nearly caused her to drop out of the top 200. She bounced back in 2014, winning the WTA Tournament of Champions at the conclusion of the year after making it to her maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the French Open. Petkovic has won nine ITF singles championships and three ITF doubles titles in addition to seven WTA Tour singles titles and one doubles win. Petkovic, who is coached by Eric van Harpen, won the German national championship in 2007 and 2009.

Andrea Petkovic was born in Tuzla, SFR Yugoslavia’s SR Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The family moved to Germany when she was 6 months old. When Petkovic was six years old, her father Zoran Petkovi—a former Yugoslav tennis player and member of the Yugoslavia Davis Cup team—began teaching her the game. At the time, he was a coach at a club in Darmstadt. She was introduced to the sport by him, who later served as her coach. Because Zoran never pushed her to play tennis professionally, she was able to complete high school before devoting her time to the sport.

In addition to playing tennis, she enjoys reading; her favorite writers are Goethe and Wilde.

While her younger sister Anja is a student, her mother Amira works as a dental assistant.

Petkovic earned an Abitur from the Georg-Büchner-Schule in Darmstadt in 2006 to complete his high school education. Since 2008, she has been a political science student at FernUniversität Hagen.

Petkovic also has a popular YouTube channel where her video diary “Petkorazzi” may be found. She pokes fun at herself, offers chances for fans to win gifts, and documents her life on the road in the blog. She writes her blog in both English and German. She began penning a column for the Süddeutsche Zeitung in April 2018.

She has published irregularly spaced diaries on her life on the WTA Tour in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, a significant German newspaper, from the start of her professional career.

In 2001, Petkovic became a citizen of Germany. She is fluent in English, French, German, and Serbian. Petkovic has Serb and Bosniak background. She mentioned that her parents might relocate to Novi Sad, Serbia, where they have a second home, in an interview she gave to the WTA in 2009. Petkovic responded when asked how she felt about Germany: “Although I am undoubtedly German, I frequently claim that my soul is Serbian. Germans tend to be more cool and reserved. I have a lot of fire in my personality and am highly emotive. I still feel incredibly connected to my heritage in that way. Despite all of that, there are many things to admire in Germany. I consider myself to be deeply ingrained in the “system” and to be a part of it.”

At the 2007 French Open, where she competed in her debut Grand Slam event, she advanced to the second round after going through qualification without dropping a set and defeating Jarmila Groth. She was defeated by Marion Bartoli, a future Wimbledon champion, there. Following this and some ITF Circuit success (she won the ITF title in Contrexéville in July 2007), she debuted in the top 100 of the WTA rankings. She avoided needing to qualify and was able to participate in the US Open main draw as a result. After defeating Audra Cohen, she advanced to the second round once more. She was defeated by Lucie afáová in round two.

She ruptured the cruciate ligament in her right knee after just two minutes of play during her first-round match against Anna Chakvetadze at the Australian Open in January 2008. She was unable to compete in any competition for about eight months as a result, which caused her ranking to fall to 465. She returned to playing primarily on the ITF Circuit after the injury, where she won a competition in Istanbul in November 2008. She was ranked 315 at the end of the year.

2009: WTA Tour Debut Victory

Due to a protected status, Petkovic competed in her first tournament in the Australian Open in 2009. She advanced to the second round by defeating fellow German Kathrin Wörle, but Alizé Cornet ultimately prevailed. Up until June, she generally continued to compete in ITF tournaments with success. She defeated Jelena Doki in the semifinals of the Open Romania in Bucharest, winning the tournament, and regaining a top-100 ranking.

Petkovic won her first WTA competition in Bad Gastein in July 2009, dropping just one set the entire time.

In the final, she overcame Raluca Olaru. She defeated Iveta Beneová and Anna-Lena Grönefeld along the way to winning the title. Along with Tatjana Malek, she competed in the Bad Gastein doubles championship. The next week, she competed in Istanbul and advanced to the semifinals before falling to Lucie Hradecká in three close sets. She attained her then career-high singles ranking of No. 52 after those two weeks.

She found it difficult to build on her success for the remainder of the year, but she had another strong performance in the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, where she advanced past the round of 16 after passing the qualifying. She defeated top-10 player Svetlana Kuznetsova in the second round, but was eliminated in three sets by Agnieszka Radwanska.
