Jennette McCurdy, a former child star, claims that she was “exploited” while working on the Nickelodeon series “iCarly.”

In her memoir, Jennette McCurdy asserts that she was “exploited” as a child performer and is still recovering from the trauma she experienced at the time. In Nickelodeon’s “iCarly” and “Sam & Cat,” the now-retired actress played comedic roles, but she is still recovering from the trauma of being a child celebrity.

The 29-year-old actress described how she wanted to stop performing at an early age because she never found it enjoyable in her biography titled “I’m Glad My Mom Died.” She also recalled an uncomfortable audition she had, which her mother had freaked out over and later guilted her into continuing despite her dislike of acting.

On Thursday, August 4, Jennette revealed in an interview with the New York Times that her “whole childhood and adolescence were severely exploited.” She observed, “There have been instances where people, even having the greatest of intentions, may not have known what they were doing. And instances where they did—and were fully aware of what they were doing.” Jennette discusses being “photographed in a bikini at a wardrobe fitting and being persuaded to drink alcohol by an intimidating individual she simply refers to as the Creator” in her brand-new novel. Although the identity of “The Creator” is unclear, Jennette claimed that her mother Debra McCurdy, who passed away from cancer in 2013, was there in such situations but didn’t intervene since she believed it was normal for an actor to experience such things.

At the time, Jennette suppressed her worries, but she couldn’t stop feeling angry at the way she was treated on the set, especially after she had been promised a spin-off series. The former actress claimed that Nickelodeon broke their commitment and cast her as Ariana Grande’s co-lead in “Sam & Cat” instead. But that’s when she realised she couldn’t handle it any longer. In “I’m Glad My Mom Died,” Jennette says, “What finally undone me was when Ariana came whistle-toning in with joy because she had spent the previous evening playing charades at Tom Hanks’s house. That was the moment I snapped.”

She allegedly turned down a $300,000 deal from Nickelodeon to keep her experiences quiet after “Sam & Cat” was cancelled. Miranda Cosgrove, Jennette’s ‘iCarly’ co-star, admitted that she wasn’t paying attention at the time and didn’t understand why her buddy was so resentful. Miranda told the Times, “You’re so in your own head when you’re young.” You cannot possibly fathom the struggles of others around you. She said Jennette was skilled at maintaining appearances. Miranda said, “You don’t expect something like that from the person in the room who is making everybody laugh.
