Early years

Glasgow is where Hendry was born. He played for Celtic and Peterborough United when he was young. He tried out for Dundee United in 2013 and later signed a contract with them, but he got glandular fever that made his time there very hard.

Club career

In August 2014, Hendry joined Partick Thistle. He played a lot for Thistle’s development team before making his debut for the first team on the last day of the 2014–15 season, May 23, 2015, at Fir Park against Motherwell in a 0-0 draw.

Hendry signed a new one-year deal with the Jags on June 2, 2015. He did this along with David Wilson and goalkeepers Paul Gallacher and Tomá ern. After a great preseason, Hendry came on as a substitute in the first game of the season against Hamilton after only 29 minutes. Frédéric Frans had been sent off earlier, so Hendry and Liam Lindsay helped keep a clean sheet as the game ended 0-0.  After the game, it was said that Hendry was being watched by English Premier League club Everton.

Hendry joined Wigan Athletic on September 1, 2015.

In March 2016, he went on loan to League One team Shrewsbury Town until the end of the season.

Hendry went on loan to League One team Milton Keynes Dons on August 31, 2016, and stayed there until January 2017.

On October 4, 2016, Hendry played in his first game for Milton Keynes Dons. It was a 1-0 win over Peterborough United away in the EFL Trophy group stage.

In July 2017, Hendry signed a two-year deal with Dundee.

In the first part of the 2017–18 season, he played a lot for Dundee and became a key player. Celtic made offers to Dundee for Hendry in January 2018, but Dundee turned them down. On January 31, they agreed to a club-record fee.

On January 31, 2018, Celtic signed Hendry to a four-and-a-half-year deal. On February 3, he played his first game for the team, which lost 1-0 at Kilmarnock.

Hendry went on loan to A-League club Melbourne City on January 22, 2020, for the rest of the season. Hendry hurt a knee ligament in his second game for Melbourne, which meant he had to have surgery.

Hendry was loaned to the Belgian team KV Oostende in July 2020, and Celtic gave KV Oostende the right to buy him first. In September 2020, when he first played in the Jupiler Pro League, he scored the game-winning goal in the last minute against KV Mechelen to help his new team win 1-0. At the end of the season, Hendry would be named the Jupiler Pro League Player of the Season. In June of 2021, Hendry moved to Oostende for good.

Club Brugge

Hendry signed a four-year deal with Club Brugge on August 31, 2021. This was just two months after he signed a permanent deal with KV Oostende. He played in the famous 1–1 draw between Brugge and PSG in the Champions League, where Messi, Mbappé, and Neymar played together for the first time. The BBC named him Player of the Match. Club Brugge would win the Jupiler Pro League title after Hendry scored his first goal for the team in a game against Royal Antwerp.

Give Cremonese a loan

Hendry joined Cremonese in Italy on loan on September 1, 2022, with an option to buy.

Hendry played his first game for Cremonese, which was against Atalanta in Serie A.

An international job

In March 2018, Hendry was put on the Scotland senior team for the first time. He played in friendlies against Costa Rica and Hungary. He played his first game for Scotland on March 27, when they beat Hungary 1-0. Hendry was called back to the team in March 2021 after doing well for KV Oostende in the Belgian league. Then, he was put on Scotland’s team for the delayed UEFA Euro 2020 finals and scored his first international goal in a friendly against the Netherlands before the tournament.

Hendry tied the game against the Republic of Ireland in the UEFA Nations League on September 23, 2022. This goal was very important. Scotland won the game by a score of 2-1.

After turning down offers from Hearts, The Rangers, and England, Celtic signed a player from Dundee, whose manager, Neil McCann, didn’t like Celtic. Alex McLeish, who used to be the manager of Scotland and Rangers, once said of Jack Hendry that he was “Alan Hansen in the making.”

Celtic got Jack Hendry in the second season Brendan Rodgers was in charge, when the team’s defense, especially in the middle of the field, was in trouble. This was done to give Jack Hendry a chance that his teammates wouldn’t have as easily elsewhere on the field. His first game was a loss to Kilmarnock by a score of 1-0. It was only Rodgers’ second loss at home, but there wasn’t much Hendry could do about it.

He actually had a strange start to his career. In the second half of the 2017–18 season, when Celtic was on its way to a second consecutive treble, he won a set of well-deserved games. Even though Celtic won a lot of games at home in their second season, they didn’t always impress, and some people noticed that Jack Hendry seemed to play in a lot of those boring games. Many people were wrong to say that, because it wasn’t his fault, and he did play in some important games, like a 3-2 win away and a 5-0 win at home over Sevco.

He didn’t help himself by trying to play too much football instead of just getting rid of the ball, which is what a center back should do in many situations, but he had time to learn.

People just needed to give him time to show what he could do before judging him. Hendry was the least of the problems with a defense (except for Tierney) that was getting a lot of criticism for good reason. In the 2018-19 season, when Benkovic joined Celtic on loan, Hendry had to wait longer for a spot.

Early on, he was given silly names like “The Hendry Curse” because Celtic seemed to have trouble winning when he was on the field. There are a lot of reasons why Celtic didn’t do well in those games, and the label shouldn’t have stuck, but it did. Celtic may not have been doing as well as they should have been, but Hendry wasn’t the only one to blame.
