Career: Grant Wahl

The town of Mission, Kansas is where Wahl was born. During his first year at Princeton University, he covered the men’s soccer team for the Princeton Tigers. At the time, the squad was managed by Bob Bradley, who would later become a manager for several teams in Major League Soccer as well as the United States national team. Before returning to the United States in time for the 1994 FIFA World Cup, Bradley gave Wahl the option to pursue his education in Argentina, where he worked with Boca Juniors throughout his time there. Wahl attributes the development of his passion for the sport to the influence that Bradley had on him.

In 1996, Wahl started his professional life off by working as an intern with the Miami Herald. After leaving that position in November 1996, he started working as a college basketball and soccer reporter for Sports Illustrated.

Throughout his career, Wahl has worked as a reporter for a total of twelve NCAA basketball tournaments, eight World Cups, and four Olympic events.

First garnering critical praise for his cover story titled “Where’s Daddy?” (1998), in which he tracked the rising number of children born to professional athletes whose fathers were not in their lives, Wahl is best known for his work.

Since that time, he has penned a great deal of feature articles and biographies on many athletes. Additionally, Wahl is the recipient of four Magazine Story of the Year awards, which are presented annually by the United States Basketball Writers Association.

In October of 2000, Wahl was given a promotion at Sports Illustrated, moving him up to the rank of senior writer. Both the magazine and SI.com rely heavily on Wahl for their coverage of soccer.

In his debut book, published in 2009 and titled “The Beckham Experiment,” Wahl examined the influence that David Beckham’s move from the New York Red Bulls to the Los Angeles Galaxy had on Major League Soccer (MLS). It went on to become a best seller on the New York Times.

In October 2009, while Wahl was in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, covering the fourth round of 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification, he was robbed at gunpoint of his phone and wallet in broad daylight. Earlier that day, he had interviewed interim Honduran president Roberto Micheletti, who later apologized to Wahl for the incident. Wahl was covering the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification.

In February of 2011, Wahl made the announcement that he was considering running against Sepp Blatter in the next election for the presidency of FIFA. Blatter has been in office since 1998.

However, he withdrew his participation before to the deadline that was officially established because he was unable to secure an endorsement from a football association (at least one was required). As a direct response to Wahl’s candidacy, FIFA revised its procedure for presidential nominations to stipulate that candidates must receive the support of at least five associations.

Following his participation in the network’s coverage of the UEFA Euro 2012 tournament earlier that year, Wahl joined FOX Sports in October 2012 after having previously worked for the network.

With Wahl at the lead, Sports Illustrated debuted their soccer section in 2013, and it was dubbed “Planet Ftbol.”

After criticizing James Heckman, the CEO of the magazine’s publisher Maven, for his handling of wage cuts during the coronavirus pandemic, Wahl was let go from his position at Sports Illustrated on April 10, 2020. This was the day Wahl’s termination took effect. Heckman’s answer was to condemn both the job that Wahl had done and Wahl’s unwillingness to voluntarily take a permanent pay decrease.

On October 5, 2021, Wahl joined CBS Sports as an analyst for the network’s coverage of CONCACAF soccer events. In addition, he served as an editorial consultant for soccer documentaries that were to be broadcast on Paramount+. Wahl’s first day on the job was October 5.
