Muay Thai was where Carano got her start as a professional athlete. Her ex-boyfriend Kevin Ross, a professional Muay Thai fighter, encouraged her to start training in the sport. Carano accepted an offer from Jamie Levine to compete in the first-ever sanctioned female mixed martial arts battle in Nevada with World Extreme Fighting to take against Leiticia Pestova after obtaining a record of 12–1–1 in Muay Thai. Carano’s opponent for the match was Leiticia Pestova (a bout Carano won in 38 seconds). She was given the opportunity to compete against Rosi Sexton at the World Pro Fighting exhibition in Las Vegas. After a standoff that lasted many months regarding their free agent status, Carano and other fighters from the now-defunct ProElite promotion became contractually linked with Strikeforce after Strikeforce purchased the assets of ProElite.
