How I grew up and went to school

Gary Leonard Oldman was born on March 21, 1958, in New Cross, London. He is the son of Leonard Bertram Oldman (1921–1985), a former sailor who also worked as a welder, and Kathleen (née Cheriton; 1919–2018). He said that his father was an alcoholic who left the family when Oldman was seven years old. His older sister, Maureen, is an actress who is better known by her stage name Laila Morse. She was in Oldman’s first movie as a director, Nil by Mouth, in 1997, before she played Mo Harris on the BBC soap opera EastEnders, which was her most famous role.

Oldman went to school in Deptford at West Greenwich School. When he was 16, he quit to work in a sports shop.

As a child, he played the piano, but after seeing Malcolm McDowell in the movie The Raging Moon, he decided to become an actor instead (1971).

In an interview with Charlie Rose in 1995, he said, “Something about Malcolm just grabbed me, and I connected, and I said, ‘I want to do that.'”

Oldman grew up in south London and cheered for his local team, Millwall F.C. He also followed Manchester United because he looked up to George Best. In 2011, his mother told him that his father had played for the Millwall team right after World War II: “Just after the war, [my mother] ran a boarding house for football players, specifically Millwall players. And I knew that my dad was connected to the reserve team in some way. But my mom told me two weeks ago, “Oh yeah, your dad played for Millwall. When he was young, he played a few games with the first team.”

During the mid-1970s, Oldman studied with the Young People’s Theatre in Greenwich while working on assembly lines, as a porter in an operating room, selling shoes, and cutting the heads off of pigs in a slaughterhouse. He tried to get into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), but he didn’t get in. RADA told him he could try again the next year, but he should find another job. Charlie Rose asked him if he had told RADA about this, and Oldman joked, “The work speaks for itself.”

He got a scholarship to Rose Bruford College in Sidcup, south-east London, where he got a BA in acting in 1979.

Oldman said that during his time there, he was “shy” but worked hard. He played roles like Puck in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Career

Oldman was the first actor in his class to get professional work after he graduated from drama school. He said that this wasn’t because he was the best actor, but because he worked hard and tried. After that, he wrote plays like “Cabaret,” “Privates on Parade,” and “Romeo and Juliet.” In the play Dick Whittington and His Cat, which was put on at York in December 1979, Oldman played Puss. He also did theater in Colchester and with the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow. In the 1980s, Oldman’s work ethic and trademark intensity made him a crowd favorite in Glasgow.
