No, the movie “Wedding Season” is not based on a factual incident. Shiwani Srivastava, an up-and-coming screenwriter, wrote the screenplay on which it was based. In 2018, Srivastava submitted her screenplay for “Wedding Season” to a number of contests, including the ScreenCraft Comedy Competition, the Academy Nicholl Fellowship, and Final Draft’s Big Break. She finished second in the ScreenCraft Comedy Competition, and it’s been claimed that the competition’s organisers assisted her in securing a deal with Netflix.
Although “Wedding Season” was Srivastava’s debut script, she did not start writing without doing any research. Despite having a Master’s in South Asian Studies and working at a completely different job before, Srivastava’s passion has always been scriptwriting. So before writing the story she wanted to tell, she tried to understand as much as she could about it.
It wasn’t immediately successful, according to Srivastava, who spoke to ScreenCraft. “I don’t believe [my script] advanced to the quarterfinals or semifinals or whatever, but I believe what was beneficial, especially being off in San Francisco, was that there weren’t many people to get critiques from and people who had previously seen it. I continued rewriting and used the contest to collect notes. And I believe it had been at least four years before I entered that ScreenCraft competition.
In a July 2022 interview, Sharda stated that Asha’s maverick personality drew her to her. Sharda further stated that she admired Asha’s desire to defy expectations in every area of her life. Sharma was attracted by his character’s nonconformist nature. Additionally, he described the experience of working on a Netflix movie where the majority of the cast and crew are of Indian heritage as a blessing and added that he loved every aspect of it. Sharda claims that the ‘Wedding Season’ actors and crew were extremely fortunate because there was consistency in their conception of the movie. They tried to strike a balance between playing inside the romantic comedy genre just enough and playing it too hard. They were especially careful to avoid fetishizing their own culture.
