After she received her diploma from college, she uprooted her life and relocated to New York City.

Carden became a member of Venus Rising, a music-comedy company, and made an appearance in the musical Seven Hearts in the year 2001. Seven Hearts is about a group of friends living in San Francisco.

The next year, she starred in a Christmas performance where the main character was frustrated that her family was more focused on the wedding of her self-centered sister than on keeping the Christmas spirit alive. In addition to that, she managed and produced the show.

Carden was asked to watch an improvised sketch comedy event at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater (UCB) by a friend.
