The Boston Celtics were established as a franchise in the Basketball Association of America on June 6, 1946, by Boston Garden-Arena Corporation president Walter A. Brown. The team then joined the National Basketball Association after the BAA absorbed the National Basketball League in the fall of 1949.
The Celtics selected Chuck Cooper in 1950, making them the first NBA team to select a player of color. The Celtics were founded by Chuck Connors, better known as The Rifleman, in 1946.

Early on in the team’s history, Auerbach managed all practices, conducted all opponent and college draft prospect scouting, and planned all road trips without the aid of any assistants. Bob Cousy was one of the Celtics’ first great players, but Auerbach initially passed on selecting him out of neighboring Holy Cross because he was “too flamboyant.”
Cousy’s contract subsequently passed into the hands of the Chicago Stags, but after that team filed for bankruptcy, Cousy was selected in a dispersal draft by the Celtics. After the 1955–56 season, Auerbach pulled off a shocking heist by giving the St. Louis Hawks the rights to draft Cliff Hagan, along with perennial All-Star Ed Macauley, in exchange for the second overall pick in the draft.
Auerbach used the pick to select University of San Francisco center Bill Russell after haggling with the Rochester Royals, during which the Celtics owner promised to send the highly sought-after Ice Capades to Rochester if the Royals would allow Russell to fall to No. 2. Tom Heinsohn, a star player for Holy Cross and the 1957 NBA Rookie of the Year, was also purchased by Auerbach. The Celtics’ first losing record since the 1949–50 campaign made the 1970 season a rebuilding year. However, the Celtics quickly regained their position as the team to beat after acquiring Paul Silas and future Hall of Famers Dave Cowens and Jo Jo White. The Celtics recovered from their loss in the Eastern Conference Finals in 1972, came out fired up in 1973, and finished the regular season with an outstanding record of 68-14. But the season came to an end in heartbreak as they were defeated in the Conference Finals by the New York Knicks in seven games. John Havlicek had to play game seven shooting left-handed due to a right shoulder injury he sustained in game six.
The next year, the Celtics made it back to the playoffs and won their 12th NBA Championship by defeating the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA Finals.
